Sending a copy of FFL to private seller

Recommended Posts

You guys with FFLs -- Are there any issues with sending a copy to a private citizen selling a firearm?

I just bought a shotgun on gunbroker from a private seller -- went to my FFL and asked him to send his paperwork over to the seller -- he asked if it was a shop or private sale -- says its suggested that FFL holders not send their paperwork to private citizens

I'm not sure who suggests that but he had said its to stop copies from being used in fraudulent ways.

Now I really like the guy I use -- he's really easy to deal with -- just wondering if there are any real issues with private citizens having a copy of your FFL

No issues. Paranoid dealer. Mine is on website. Plenty of copies on Internet.

BTW, the sending non-licensee is not required to have a copy per law.

I bet that is what he is trying to tell me --  He's definitely not a paranoid dealer -- He was just speculating why he's asked not to send a copy to non-dealers

We actually talked about how easy it would be to get a copy of a FFL over the internet

RIght, but the sender should always verify the FFL information via FFLeZCheck. Maybe someday, ATF will have a "secure" database for everyone to use for that verification so that there would be no need to even look at a license.

Where would I find this law?

It's becoming an issue -- gonna have to use another FFL soon for this transfer

Actually, the law says that FFLs must get a copy of the receiving FFL license. It excludes non-dealers.

These 2 guys don't want to deal with each other --  Turns out they sent some emails back and forth

Anyway -- Contacting another FFL today and see if I can get this thing moving along

I was reading what I could find -- Nothing says sender must have a copy of FFl before sending -- just that seller must send to a confirmed FFL holder -- confirmation on ATF website

All this for a single shot shotgun...

Funny this should come up now.

I got off the phone a little while ago with Tom from HGW.  I am buying my first out of state transfer item, and it's from a private seller.  Tom suggested that the seller contact HGW to acquire a digital copy of his FFL, for the sellers benefit.  It is not necessary for private transactions, but it's a good cya for the seller.

I gave up awhile back. Now everyone can have a copy of my license. Not worth the effort restricting non-licensee. GunBroker even says everyone must have a copy.
