just to clarify that unless the storage facility limits what can be stored, it is perfectly legal to store a handgun or a long gun at a storage unit, that I am renting? Is that because once i rent the unit it is as if it my residence? I am just concerned about getting tripped up on this issue. the fact that no one or not many are caught does not in itself make it legal.

Is it legal to store long guns or hand guns at a storage facility in NJ? is an internal safe needed? if it is legal will all storage facilities allow it? and do you have any recommendations? thanks

28 inch is Ok, but longer is better, especially for trap and sporting clays, less so for skeet if going for a new gun I would get 30 for semi auto, 30 or 32 for O/U for trap some people use 34, but that is long and not suitable for other varieties.

Just my 2 cents. I was in the same position about 2 years ago. Started with a Mossberg 500 got the clay bug (trap in Fairfield and sporting clays in Lehigh Valley) Sure it is the shooter not the gun in general, but you want a gun that is at least minimally designed for the task at hand. A Mossberg is definitely not a clays gun. The recoil will beat the hell out of your shoulder. Also trying to shoot 2, fast is a real pain. After 100-200 rounds you will regret it. I bought a Beretta 391, which is a great gun. Soft, accurate and smooth. You may never want to buy another. If you can afford one new, great, if not buy used. replacement parts are readily available. I can not over recommend this gun. The only issue was that my son got the bug as well. He now uses the 391 and I bought a Beretta 686 SP1. Which is also a fabulous gun, that at about $2K it is expensive. Had to really sweet talk my wife. Father, son bonding and all that. First of all buy quality. With clays you shoot a lot. Cheap guns will not last. Also make sure you buy a clays gun, not a field gun, different setup, different feel Start with the 391, you may never want an O/U, It will last forever. Also get a shell catcher so that shells do not fly all over the place - http://www.tandsshellcatcher.com/ But if you do want a O/U look at Beretta 686 or Browning 425, they are both great guns and will last forever Also for clays, do not get shorter than 30 inch, in a O/U maybe even 32. Beretta makes the best SA clay shotguns the A400 is their latest, kickoff is really not needed since the gun is very soft shooting by itself, The most popular SA clay shotgun is the Beretta AL391, which is no longer in production but can be readily found. if you can find one, I would get that, parts are easy to get and the gun is great, it has a shim system to adjust the stock

I started with a pump and I would not recommend it. Not fast enough for doubles and has way too much recoil for extensive use. I would suggest getting a used Beretta 391 sporting in 30 inch should not be too expensive it is a great all around clay gun. If any thing is wrong with it or wears out, parts are very readily available. It is soft, easy to use and is a great first clay gun. BTW I used it for a year, then gave it to my son and bought a Beretta O/U Good luck

You may want to consider a Beretta 686 SP1, you should be able to find one for under $2k Make sure you get competition gun, not a field gun, comp guns usually have 2 beads, are heavier (less recoil). Also comp guns will not have the safety go on automatically. A A400 semi auto is also a very good gun, but not cheap. Look around for a Beretta AL391, which is a great comp semi auto gun. Get a good gun, when shooting clays, you tend to shoot a lot 100 or so shots each time. The gun needs to take a lot of abuse. Could shoot 5000rounds per year Good luck

Can I let my son (who has a FID) take a hand gun (registered to me) to the range by himself? He is over 21. I believe that it would be ok with a long gun, right? Thanks in advance

I also would recommend staying with a 12 gauge unless you absolutely can not handle the recoil. I would also counsel a semi auto 12 before going to a 20. Also might avoid it if the barrel is less than 30 inches. Since this is your first shotgun, you may want to use it for other clay sports like sporting clays as well. You might want to go to Thunder Mountain and use their guns first to get a feel of what you are comfortable with first. Fairfield is a great place, but does not rent guns or sell ammo, not as easy for the first timers.

LVSC is a great place - have been there several times 1. they have 3 levels - you should do fine on the beginners and maybe the intermediate 2. You pull for your own group. They supply a box that plugs in at each station and it has buttons on it to fire the stations 3. never went on a weekend so would not know, never did make a reservation for weekdays- call and ask. We walked the course,(very pleasant) but it helps to rent a cart to hold the ammo and the guns 4. ammo is extra, you can bring your own or buy there. They had reasonable prices just go and have a great time. It is a blast

For sporting clays Lehigh Valley is a great place, sporting clays would be great fun , for an outdoor shooting range you may want to consider Sunset Hill just over the border in PA http://sunset-range.com/index.php they have trap and rent all sorts of guns

not sure how this happened, but my son got notified today that his FID is ready. He applied in October in West Orange maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel (not an approaching train)

I am planning on going down to NC in a couple of weeks. I would like to take my shotgun, to shoot some sporting clays there. Can I legally take my shotguns with me? (unloaded, no ammo) Also about traversing Delware, Maryland and Virginia Are there any rules or regulations that I need to know about? Thanks for you help

Both are good guns, but I would suggest another option: I would get the Mossberg 500 with the combination field/security barrels 28/18.5 inch this way you have the perfect barrel for HD and clays - all for around $350 I bought this combo and I am very pleased with the shotgun. Remington may have combo's as well

So what if you had to evacaute your home due to a storm or whatever.... Do you take your handguns with you? Is it legal to be carrying around your guns in this case? What if you had to stay by a relative or in a hotel? I am sure some people on the Jersey shore had to face this issue what is the right thing to do?
