Ok with gas or propane you can look into a duel or tri fuel unit that way they will have options. There are a few ways to connect to the home from the gen. Either by a suicide cord from the gen's 220 plug to a 220 outlet in the house. If you choose that way. may sure the main is shut off and a lock is on it to protect the power lines from being back fed . Couple of quick questions for you. Do they want to use gas, propane, LP or diesel to run it? The reason is that helps decide price range and available. If they are going for one of the first three do they use any of the already at the home? This reason being will they need to store extra fuel for it or use what is on hand. Do they care about noise level of a Genny? Because if they do then you will want to look at an inverter type like the Honda's and Yamaha's. Last is what is there price range? Because if they choose inverter type their price starts about 800 and goes up. Other things to think about do they want a subpanel to run the genny into to power what they want to run in the home or just run extension cords.

First is for you to determine how much you want to/can carry. Then look at what you each need to be safe and comfortable. For me the first level is small fanny pack with a gps,led flash lite, batteries, golf pencil, paper, small first aid kit, and a small bottle of Tylenol and Alieve. And there is still room for a few more things if I need. Next is a small bag that I can carry over my shoulder(s). In that will be some dry foods that I like, extra water ( I still need to get a good travel filter.), maybe a light jacket, rain poncho, addition item for fire starting, and some cordage of some sort. The 2 items i started with are what I carry any time I go hiking with my 2 girls. If I was going to do a long term hike then I would break out my large frame pack and load it more food, a tarp, more rope, a blanket, and hammock. Now back to the question you asked I say duplicate every item that you can afford to but build your system so that as you stack them together nothing is duplicated on one person more then necessary. There are still some options. Jersey City Heights is one option , my brother -inlaw lives there in a 1 bedroom small apt. 2nd fl for 1k a month. If you are willing to move a bit out weather west or north you might find some other options in your price range and still have transport to NYC and Jersey City, as well as back down to Colts Neck. Towns to look into that may be a bit more friendly that I know of are in southern Bergen county. They are East Rutherford, Carlstadt, Lyndhurst, North Arlington. Even Kearny in Hudson county has nice sections. Hope this helps.
