  1. My experiences and thought processes on SKS/AK/Mini14/AR.....(two cents, if you think it's worth that) I've had an SKS for quite some time; I bought mine back when the chinese SKS were coming in by the crate, and one could be had new for $100 to $125. They're great shooters, but now that they're $350 and up, I don't think they are the bargain they used to be. At that time, the SKS-AK price delta was high (3-4x), and, being essentially cheap, I never considered an AK...the SKS was more than enough. Now, with the increasing SKS pricetag and dropping AK prices, the delta is under 2x...and I'm not sure what you 'lose' with the SKS versus the AK is 'worth it' anymore. The only 'advantage' the SKS has over the AK is its not so 'sinister looking' in the minds of the population as a whole. I looked at the Mini-14/30's; both the .223 and 7.62x39, and I kind of like the overall 'look' of them...polished steel and walnut just looks better to me than black plastic and aluminum. 'Made in America' is also a big plug, in my view. But their accuracy reviews are so-so, and the price! Too much for me! I then looked at the S&W M&P 15 Sport. Yes, its a 'low-end' AR, but the price wasn't so bad, and reading the various reviews...what you lose (dust cover and forward assist) isn't such a 'loss', anyway. Even though there isn't any polished steel or a sliver of walnut on it, I was sufficiently impressed that I took the plunge. Straight off, I could see why everyone likes the overall layout and function of the AR platform...and at the range, it easily out-shot my SKS...keeping it on a pie-plate at 100 yards is no problem. So....given the choice between an SKS, and AK, or a Mini-30? I'd pass on all three and go with the S&W.
  2. I got stuck as a witness for one....a caddy/jeep accident happened in front of me while I was stopped at a light, and I got subpoenaed....and subpoenaed....and subpoenaed....and...well, you get it. The court date kept getting moved around. Well, the day FINALLY came, I showed, and it turned-out that there were two or three others that were summoned, but never showed. I was the ONLY one. The judge thanked me for coming, and continued the case for some reason or other (I don't remember why) and then told the two they'd be MUCH better-off settling this BEFORE the case went forward. I never heard from 'em again. (Anyhow, while I never heard any more about it, I would have to agree - I think the older woman driving the caddy was trying to sue the young girl driving the Jeep. From the short time I had to interact with them, I would have to agree...I'm not sure if the girl was 100% right or not, but the woman driving the caddy sure was a B....)
  3. At how many rounds of .22 does that feeling kick-in?
  4. And......its gone (again) EDIT: It shows "Sold Out", but ordering via Frank's link (above) allows the order to go thru. Added 10 boxes of Rio 12 Gauge 00 Buck on sale @ $2.79 a box http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Ammunition/Shotgun-Ammunition%7C/pc/104792580/c/104691780/sc/104567580/Rio-Buckshot-Ammunition/706902.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshotgun-ammunition%2F_%2FN-1100191%2B10000047%2B4294751476%2B4294751475%2FNe-890%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104567580%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104792580%253Bcat104691780%26WTz_srn%3DBy%2BShot%2BSize%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104792580%3Bcat104691780%3Bcat104567580
  5. It happened to me years ago, with a brand-new .22 pistol that fired out of battery...the .22 round did not completely chamber (part was hanging out of the barrel). I didn't notice and squeezed the trigger....it wasn't supposed to, but the gun fired it, anyway. As would be expected, the catridge ruptured and the gasses went downward into the magazine well. Broke both of the grips and made a pretty mess of the slide/breechface. I was left with a pretty good stinging in my hand. If I remember right, it was a Lorcin, and was a giveaway/premium offered for a year's membership at an indoor range (now closed) in Pennsauken. EDIT - the range replaced it with another cheepie - a .25 Raven
  6. FID for pistol ammo - not new
  7. I think you're right SOTA.....if you're in the gunseller business, you really do need to educate your customers...all of them. And there are many that try valiantly to do just that. But I really do think the shops who want you to "show your FID card" are using it as a sales tactic. Or CYA
  8. I always thought it was more of a sales tactic. If you're looking at any firearm, and you don't know what a card is....you're a lookey-loo without a clue, and its going to be a discussion, not a sale. If you're looking at any firearm, and you DO have a card, but you don't have it with you....you're still a lookey-loo kicking it around, but at least you have a clue about how things are in NJ. If you're looking at a long gun and you HAVE your card....we're talking prices. If you're looking at a pistol and you HAVE your PTP...we're talking prices.
  9. Yup - kinda like potato chips....you cant have just one... Get this man a nice 12 Gauge pump!
  10. REAL nice blackpowder shooting! Now I am resuming my search for a left hand 12 gauge T/C New Englander barrel!
  11. Got lucky late yesterday afternoon....a brick of the blazers and a stick of CCI are on their way...even better with 11 dollars in cabelas cash thrown in the mix
  12. Hey! We never said anything of the sort....we said SIX FOR SURE! Reloading was another matter
  13. Yes - completely possible, and very common...though needing a hammer and a punch is a little extreme. The .357 cartridge, being a tenth of an inch longer than the .38 special cartridge, is extending into the area in the chamber that has been fouled by shooting the 100 or so .38 rounds. Due to the pressure created when fired, the brass cartridge case expands within the chamber, gripping the sides and helping to hold the cartridge in the chamber. When the pressure drops, the brass 'springs back' a little, allowing the extractor to remove the spent cartridge from the smooth, polished chamber. The problem is that you've deposited a good bit of fouling inside that chamber by shooting the 100 .38 specials. So, instead of smooth polished chamber, there's a ring of grit at the mouth of the .357 case (which is a tenth of an inch longer than the .38) holding the spent .357 cartridge in the chamber. Multiply this times six (all the other rounds in the cylinder) and it can be difficult popping them all out of the cylinder. Usually a good smack on the ejector rod with your palm is enough to get them out, but I guess yours must have been an extreme case.
  14. I saw that up on Facebook.....the thing is gorgeous.... my problem is I would want to shoot it!
  15. Actually, the M&P Sportie surprised me with how well it does what it does. In order to amass brass (for reloading), I have been using the inexpensive PMC .223 "bronze" with the 55 grain projectiles. I've found that 100 yards is no challenge for this combination...
  16. They had both the PA model-$556, and the NJ compliant - $575 I think
  17. I have tried to keep the ammo choices under control. For example, I tried to stick to 12 gauge...even traded-off that NICE 20 gauge B-Model Fox I had...but then there was that nice .410. I tried to keep to .357 and .45, but then along came some different .32's. A 30-06 rifle arrived early - hey, its the yardstick everyone uses.....oughta have one...but then those SKSs were SO cheap way back when...and later, I traded-off the .303 brits, but along came the Mosin Nagants...they are SO cheap, to own and to shoot...and the AR's - they really are fun guns And you gotta have a .22.....or several...
  18. My, how things have changed...when I took the class, you had to bring your own shotgun (tho they could always "find" one if you couldn't). They used to shoot some clays, take us for a walk in the woods, simulate a deer drive, and did at least one "safety check" for the class (with loaded gun-pointed up in the air -- a VERY good reminder to check your safety!).
  19. The 'going rate' used to be a case of beer.......
  20. Probably true....with the 9th circuit decision in Peruta and if SCOTUS does take-up Drake, forget the 10 round restriction; the 15 round nonsense is in jeopardy.
  21. If I was treated like that, I would have demanded a refund, left, and never returned. But now you've got me curious, 555R, if you haven't been there in awhile, and they treated you like dirt the last time you were there, why do you list Range 14 along with Brick Armory as your "home range"?
