  1. The whole concept of dash video cams cracks me up... Is there really a need for this or is it just one of the latest electronic toys being a fad?
  2. Maybe some north Jersey diners and restaurants charge more and their patrons will pay more for Taylor Ham than the more pedestrian sounding pork roll......? Hmmm ..... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  3. I am checking out Charlottesville,VA today and tonight as part of my southern road trip. So far, it seems like a very nice environment, meeting most of our criteria, (listed in an earlier post). It has a strong potential as our next residence destination for retirement. Looking forward to the continued exploration this week in SC, NC and MD. AVB-AMG Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. As an unscientific test this morning, before my road trip south, I went into the Summit Diner in my home town and asked for a pork roll, egg and cheese on a roll. They just looked at me funny as if I was speaking a foreign language.... I apologized and said I meant to say Taylor Ham. They smiled and made my breakfast sandwich. 5. And they also hate soap, barbers, and self-sufficiency.... (Sorry to digress from the tread topic) AVB-AMG Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. I think we all realize that Taylor Ham is Pork Roll. We also realize that it is a traditional and recognized custom to refer to pork roll as Taylor Ham, one of the original major brand processors of this product, in north-central NJ and northward. It is equally understood and accepted practice to refer to this processed meat product as Pork Roll in all of southern NJ. There is no clear border or demarcation line between these areas and there is obvious overlap in some counties and towns where it is referred to both ways. However you want to refer to it, both being correct, it does make a delicious breakfast sandwich! AVB-AMG Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. I am leaving tomorrow to drive down to Spartanburg, South Carolina for a couple of days, then driving up to Ashville, NC for a couple of days and then continuing up to St. Michaels, MD. This road trip is all part of my plan to scope out each area as a potential relocation destination for my wife and myself once we decide to move out of NJ. At this point, Ashville, NC is probably our first choice. Regarding the "Yankeevication", (I just made up that word), of the South, I believe that both VA and NC are and will continue to become more purple politically, with SC retaining most of its Southern culture and redness, even with the episode last summer regarding the CBF. All three states have clear advantages compared to NJ and almost all of the necessary prerequisites for us that I listed in an earlier post on this thread. AVB-AMG Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    RTSP

I am a member at RTSP, have purchased guns and accessories from them and have also used them as my FFL. I have always had very high quality professional service and attention from everyone I have dealt with, from the Owners and RSO's, to the counter staff. As both a gun range and gun retailer they get a fair amount of foot traffic on weekends and counter wait times may increase as a result. I have two questions for the OP'r: 1. What was your question to the first person behind the sales counter? 2. Why did you not speak up to get the second counter person's attention, such as saying: "excuse me, could you please help me by answering some questions regarding a gun that I am considering purchasing...?" To me, that would make more sense than just standing there waiting for the person to initiate anything and cuts down on wasted time. Put yourself in their shoes.... Is this guy just visually checking out the merchandise (window shopping), or is he serious about making a purchase? Don't expect these folks to be mind readers and try not to have such a short fuse in having your feelings hurt. Remember, we are in New Jersey after all and it is acceptable behavior to be direct..... [emoji6] AVB-AMG Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. High Exposure said: "Pork Roll is beating Taylor Ham in the poll 52%-48% as it should be!" Well, on the poll at the end of that link Taylor Ham was slightly ahead of pork roll, (as it should be.... Heh, Heh) Now it will be very interesting to see if the proposed state sandwich bills will actually make it to a vote in the dysfunctional NJ State Legislature. I think that vote will be as close as the Trump vs Clinton race in Nov. AVB-AMG

  12. Same holds true for my experience around my area.... specifically the Summit Diner: Taylor ham Don't take my word for it, read it here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/summit-diner-summit http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/columnist/greatamericanbites/2016/05/12/taylor-ham-pork-roll-new-jersey/84238166/ https://www.thrillist.com/eat/new-york/taylor-ham-or-pork-roll-what-it-means-for-new-jersey AVB-AMG
  13. I also got 27 out of 30 questions correct. I had no idea about the relatively recent "Davey Crockett" nuclear rifle Brought back distant memories of taking the dreaded SAT's.....
  14. Ah yes, the Monty Python's Black Night....."I'm invincible...!" Exactly what I was imagining when I read Newtonian's post...
  15. Yeah, your right. It is rather amusing....I usually wait until late evening before I start the next chapter(s) in my novel. I do not have as much free time during normal business hours. I am envious!
  16. Some of you guys must have way too much free time........ Today, for the first time in what seems an eternity, I had to put on sunglasses for my driving commute. It is about time....!
  17. I just bought the clear adhesive plastic laminate sheets from Staples and did it myself and trimmed it to the size I wanted so it fits in my wallet. It makes practical sense for durability and is not rocket science.....
  18. I have not been to a Sports Authority for quite a number of years. My sense is that the growing trend is for many gun owners, like myself, is to go online to the many various retailers who sell ammo for my handguns and rifle and purchase what I want from them and have it shipped to my home. Very straight forward and easy. Of course I need to email them a pdf file copy of my NJ FID card, but that I have no problem with that. From my research, the prices I can get from online vendors is as good, if not better than many NJ retailers and do not have to pay NJ sales tax. The exception to this for me is when I want to purchase shotgun shells. I find that the best prices for what I want for sporting clays is at WalMart, specifically down in North Carolina where I do not need to show any ID to purchase what I want and can stock up. Alas, I think we are going to continue to see a reduction and consolidation of big-box retailers that sell ammo, in the face of the migration to online retailers due to the ease of ordering, as well as the very tangible savings of both cost and time. (I think that an excellent example is that of Amazon Prime is the crack cocaine for today's American consumer.....) AVB-AMG
  19. lunker & Rob0115: I also got my shotgun professionally fitted at G&H/Hudson Farm over the past three months, as well has taking additional lessons. Yes, it was expensive, more than I had anticipated, but I feel it was well worth it, along with the valuable one-on-one instruction of the important fundamentals that I can now practice on my own, as well as enjoying the beautiful setting of Hudson Farm. Going through the process of measurements and shooting at a pattern board, then subsequently having their gunsmith bending my stock slightly, along with adding a 1/4" thick pad to the recoil pad on the butt of the stock, has really made a noticeable and positive difference in my consistent accuracy. BTW - I have also joined the Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays Club & Range in Coplay, PA and go there to practice once a month, which is much more reasonably priced and only about a one and a half hour drive from my NJ home. FYI - Here is a link to their web site: http://www.lvsclays.com/ Recently, as co-mingled birthday gifts to my wife, sister and brother-in-law, I treated them to a 4-hr. group lesson with the same G&H instructor I have been using and whom I greatly respect, to introduce them to Sporting Clays, as well as to de-mystify what shooting a shotgun is all about. They were provided with shotguns that were appropriately sized for them, (20 & 28 gage), which was important for a first time shooter. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that all three of them really enjoyed the experience and now have a better appreciation of what this form of gun sport is all about. They would also like to do it again... AVB-AMG
  20. Newtonian: You certainly have a flourish of blogging energy today.... good to hear from you. Now I have to believe that you are kidding or at the very least, exaggerating in your statement about women and the vote. We all know that there are as many ignorant, uninformed, intellectually lazy American men as there are American women of voting age. Donald Trump only has himself to blame for turning off what has been estimated to be anywhere from 60% to 75%+ of all American women who are expected to vote in this fall's general election. Only time will tell if this dramatic majority of women will not vote for Donald Trump, but at this point I believe that will probably be the case. I know that my wife is more intelligent, better educated, more tolerant and an all-around better person than I am. We have had very interesting, challenging and sometimes combative discussions on all topics, including this bizarre and unprecedented Presidential election soap opera, starting in the spring of 2015. I know she is not alone in her mental abilities compared with many other women that we both know, yet may possibly be in the minority of all American women, but who really knows....? But, most importantly, I would never deny her or other American women their hard earned right to vote. AVB-AMG
  21. That photo shows excellent form of the ladies all lined up.... Brings back memories of old film footage of Esther Williams and her group doing synchronized swimming in Florida.
  22. As a young teenager back in the early 1970’s, I was on the rifle team of an organization that I was a member of for a number of years called: The Junior Essex Troop of Cavalry, based in West Orange, NJ. It was the junior mounted troop organization, affiliated with the 102d Cavalry Regiment of the New Jersey National Guard. We would use the rifle range in the basement of their New Jersey National Guard Armory across the street on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. FYI – if you are interested, here are some web links for some more information and videos about this Troop: http://www.essextroop.org/id22.htm AVB-AMG
  23. Like Newtonian, I have some politically liberal relatives who have held similar anti-gun beliefs. Thankfully, they have been willing to have a reasoned and thoughtful discussion with me to hear and consider all sides of the various pro and anti-gun arguments. Over the past couple of years I have found that the best way to demonstrate my pro-gun arguments as well as to demystify guns for them, has been to invite them to join me at a gun range, (indoors for handguns and outdoors for shotguns), so they may experience for themselves what it is like to fire a gun, either at a paper target or sporting clays. For my wife, sister and brother-in-law, I have even given them gifts of paid private lessons with an experienced, trained and patient instructor so they learn the gun handling basics, starting with gun safety. At this point, they all have a better understanding and appreciation of guns and have started to modify and evolve their previous stand and are more accepting of guns in our society, with some reservations. It is a start of a trek down a long path that may or may not result in their agreeing fully with my beliefs but has fostered a better consideration and respect for those of us who enjoy guns for sport as well as for the concern for protection of oneself and family. Once again, Vlad G. makes a very astute and succinct observation, that I agree with. It always seems worse than it turns out to be with some time and historical perspective. FWIW, I am not going to hold my breath that the existing gun laws will be repealed in the state of NJ, but am encouraged that at least some recent progress has been made by NJ’s state government with their finally starting to realize just how draconian NJ gun regulations are and their taking small, baby-steps to ease them somewhat. While this topic may have already been discussed in another thread, if deserves to be reiterated. Specifically, the early April announcement by the acting NJ State Attorney General Robert Lougy that the Governor, through executive action and announcement by the AG’s office, was moving to clarify the vague portions of NJ’s gun transportation laws. Lougy stated that the new transport guideline would "provide uniformity across the state" and provide "additional clarity to police, prosecutors, and law abiding gun owners." We have known that NJ residents may transport a firearm that is unloaded and properly stored in their vehicle, if they have a NJ FPID card, but without a carry permit, to and from their home and business, hunting, shooting ranges, gun stores and while moving between residences. Paraphrasing, the existing NJ law allows, but does not define, "reasonably necessary" deviations in the course of the direct travel between one’s home and a gun range or store. As such, many people interpreted the law as prohibiting someone carrying a gun in their vehicle to stop to fill up their vehicle with gas or even use a restroom on the way to and from their home. The executive action now cites some examples of deviations that now qualify as "reasonably necessary" and include "collecting and discharging passengers; purchasing fuel, food and beverages, medication, or other needed supplies; using a restroom; contending with an emergency situation; or driving around a traffic jam." They finally recognized that prior to this; we lawful gun owners faced very severe criminal penalties if we did any of these actions that are considered normal and legal in all other states, (as far as I am aware….). (I know.. way too long for Zeke to read.....oh well) AVB-AMG
  24. NJGF: What am I missing here? When I am at the range, I always shoot every round that I have loaded into my magazines. Can't think of a time when I have fired only some rounds in a fully loaded magazine. So when I am finished at the range all of my magazines are empty. I guess some people may do that but not really sure why....? Ricky_Bobby: One of my vehicles has a trunk and the other, a SUV, does not (obviously). Regardless of which vehicle I drive to the range, my firearm(s) and ammo go in the far back: in the car trunk or rear luggage area of the SUV, with the horizontal vinyl cover shade pulled over everything for visual concealment. I do this because I drive not only in NJ, but also to destinations in both PA and NC, which requires driving through DE, MD, VA, WV. Similar to you, I have formed the habit of storing and transporting my ammo in their original cardboard boxes, (either 20 or 50 rounds, depending on the caliber), placed inside MTM plastic ammo cans that are locked with a simple keyed padlock. It is easier to stack and store the various ammo calibers at home this way as well. I also use simple TSA-approved cable combination luggage locks to secure the zippers on my range bag(s) that may have one or more handguns inside, as well as my rifle and/or shot gun bag, to satisfy any state's "locked" provision that I am traveling through or to. I put the handguns in separate silicone treated pistol socks for corrosion prevention, that are then put inside separate single soft zippered pistol cases that hold multiple unloaded magazines that are specific to that handgun. I find that is a good way not to mix up the different magazines for the different handguns. Some folks here may consider all this overkill, but it works for me. As I stated in my earlier post #31 on this thread, I would rather take extra cautious measures, than just winging it and hoping that I am not stopped by a LEO, for whatever reason, on my trip to or from the range and then taking a chance that his interpretation of the law may not coincide with the actual law.
