Are AK 47 and 74 mags interchangeable? I know they use polymer mags later on but can one put 5.45x39 ammo in 7.62 mags and use them in an AK-74?

round is different... specifically the case is a lot different..

 

magazines look different..

 

i imagine you would potentially experience feed issues... that is IF the round even physically fits enough to load a magazine..

The magazine wells are different as well. An AK-74 magazine will not fit into an AK 47 magazine well and vice versa.

 

Typically, you see steel 47 and polymer 74 (which are not actually all polymer, they have steel framing in the lips, spine, and sides) but there are polymer and steel versions of both families of magazines. There are tons of different variations of magazines spanning many countries of origin.

EDIT: And yeah, there are actual 5.56mm AK weapons as well, not just sporters. Some of the former Soviet countries that joined NATO, like Poland, use 5.56mm AKs.
