Savage Edge

I'm looking into adding a bolt-action to my collection, and the Savage Edge seems the best fit (for a starter bolt actions). However, I can't seem to find one in a store to see how it feels. Anyone have/try one, or have any thoughts (or suggestions for an alternative)

I have not handled or even seen an Edge rifle. I have read about them though. That said...

I don't know what your budget is, and if you are looking for a hunting or a target rifle. If it's for hunting then I'm sure the Edge is an inexpensive decent quality choice. If you are looking for a target rifle, for only a few hundred more you can get a 10FP which is built for accuracy. I have the Model 10 Precision Carbine. I got it on GunBroker.com for just under $700. There are models with the AccuTrigger that have a cheap synthetic stock (which you could upgrade to something nicer later) that sell for $100-200 less than that.

thanks. I should have mentioned, this is purely for target. The edge is right around what's I'm willing to spend for a starter bolt-action (I was looking at the stevens, but those run around 600)

dont forget the money pits... Optics and ammo. esp if 308.

 

If you say this is a target rifle... this is important.

 

Optics, most target shooters will spend as much on a scope as they do on a rifle, if not more. Once you are shooting at 300 yards or more.... you want it. =)

 

Secondly, ammo. Most good 308 is between 75 cents to $1 a round. Target ammo is sometimes close to $2 a round retail, $1.25 a round if you shop it online.

 

Lastly... do yourself and your wallet the right thing and buy used if you can. Most often, alot of the rifles are wayyyyy under utilized, and someone may shoot 100 rounds and it sits... I am quite certain if you go into the average american home, open their safe, and look at a bolt action rem 700, Savage 10fp, etc... it will have less than 250 rounds fired. This is not an AR, this is not an AK.... if you shoot 60 rounds in a sitting, that is alot!.

 

For instance, I bought my Remington 700 VS for about $700. It came with an alright scope, however I spent another $600 on a top end Nikon. The scope on the rig makes a huge impact. Make sure you also have good bases for the scope and rings. Lastly, dont forget a good Bipod, $50 to $100.

 

Lastly.... cleaning supplies. lol.

Check out a Mosin Nagant. Dirt cheap 7.62x54R ammo (~.20c a round!), dirt cheap rifles ($60-300)... probably the best bang for the buck rifle out there. If you want accuracy look for a 91/30 or M39... if you want awesome booms and fireballs check out M44s or M38s. The round is comparable to a .30-06. These are very awesome WWII vintage bolt action rifles. You *can* mount a scope on these, but it typically requires purchasing a "sniper bolt" or modifying your straight bolt do it curves down.

ok, so just looked at a few of the reviews. Its not a bad rifle, but by all means, it is a hunting rifle, not really designed to be a target rifle.

 

You will want a better scope but most of all, Ammo. Depending on what caliber you go with, expect $20 a box if you are not reloading. So if money is really an issue, go Milsurplus. You can get a tried and proven bolt action, dirt cheap ammo (for now), huge fireballs, and knowing that you have a true piece of history.

 

If you pick up a basic mil surplus... you can easily upgrade it in the future. check out Eric's Monster Mosin. It will give most modern firearms a run for their money.

i have two savages, one 308 with accu-trigger one 223 without. if you want to give them a try send me a pm. For bolt guns it looks good for the money. You can make any bolt gun more accurate. Depending on how the trigger on it is set up I might be able to adjust it for you, like I have on mine.
