Guest Posted July 15, 2010 Pardon the newb but, if one were to sell a handgun, say through gunbroker, what steps would have to be taken to ensure that the sale was legal? a local FFL would facilitate the transfer.. they normally charge a modest fee for the work they do.. coldsolderjoint 84 Posted July 15, 2010 If the buyer is a NJ resident, a Pistol Purchase permit and ID are needed, buyer should not have purchased a handgun in the prior 30 days. Face to Face sale can occur. (Seller forwards appropriate copies of PPP to authorities). If the buyer is out of state, a FFL must receive the gun in the other state. You can ship it yourself (Overnight/2nd day (depending on their policy) at UPS or FedEX hubs), if the receiving FFL provides a copy of their FFL, you can check the validity at the ATF website. or you can use a local FFL to ship it for you. The local FFL can send the handgun via USPS priority mail at a lower rate, but will most likely charge you their transfer fee plus the shipping cost for the service. Check before you decide your option as many FFL's will not accept shipments from private individuals.
