sirsloop 1 Posted August 4, 2010 So whats the deal with this .50cal limit on bullets? Some desk jockey skeerd of shootin .60cal? Looking through the National Firearms Act... looks like a bunch of buzzkill lame-o legislation!
FFDP82 4 Posted August 4, 2010 There is no limit on bullets, there is a .50cal limit on rifled bore weapons. Certain weapons can apply to ATF and get an exemption from destructive device classification for "sporting purposes" ie the .577 T-Rex, .600 Nitro, etc. are not classified as destructive devices. Smooth bore weapons such as shotguns and antique cannons, black powder .70 cal muzzleloaders etc. are also exempt. Stuff like 20mm vulcan, WW1-2 era cannons, 40mm grenade launchers are considered destructive devices. As are things that explode, for example a 40mm Grenade Launcher is a DD and every round of explosive ammo for it also needs a tax stamp as well. ie a launcher and 5 grenades is $1200 in stamps. Not that the NFA is in any way a good thing, but keep in mind that SBRs, SBS, DD, and machine guns are not quite banned...You can get all the stamps you want in America, and there's a lot of people that set up trusts or corporations and can obtain NFA tax stamps without cleo signature, fingerprints, etc. It's an undue restriction for sure (especially SBR and SBS...the idea that .5" less of barrel is the difference between legal and 10 year prison sentence is ridiculous) but people in the USA still get to have plenty of fun with cool toys. NJ's definition is a lot more strict and includes shit like potato guns, etc. In any event, you're about 75 years late in complaining about the NFA And no offense, but considering as an NJ resident you can't even do such simple things as buy a pistol without special individual permits, carry a gun for self defense, put a collapsible stock on your AR-15, and permits can be denied for slamming doors or seeing a marriage counselor half a decade ago, I think we have other priorities to worry about
