Greetings and Salutations!

Although not needed to purchase a handgun, you should get your FID, Firearms ID Card, if you don't have one. Need it to buy handgun ammo from a store in this state. You will also need a "Permit to Purchase a Handgun and Form of Register" for each handgun you wish to purchase. They are only good for 90 days and then can be extended for 90 days, so don't apply until you are about ready to purchase or they could expire before you use them.

I may be wrong here, but I thought an FID is needed to buy any firearms, handgun included. Besides, it's mostly all the same paperwork + fingerprints.

It's entirely possible to buy a handgun without a Firearm's Purchaser ID. If you don't have FPID you can still apply for a permit to purchase a handgun. It's foolish in my opinion since the process is identical, but legally, it's not a requirement.

Many police in NJ think that a FPID is a Firearms OWNERSHIP ID, meaning you must have one to own any firearm. It's simply not true, however a street cop who pulls you over and doesn't know the law might let you go if you have a FPID whereas he may detain you if you do not.

So to apply for my FID I need to go to my local police station? Around here that is the NJSP Barracks. Can i feel these forms out online?

Yes, go to your local PD unless your town doesn't have one then to your NJSP station.

Many but not all of the forms are downloadable from the NJSP website. They must all be handed in on paper. You will also need to pay various fees and get fingerprinted. Best to stop in there first to see what they need from you.
