NJ609 22 Posted December 2, 2010 Does anyone have any recommendations for an epoxy to use to fix small cracks in some old wooden stocks? These are old, "loved" firearms that are pretty beat up but will still shoot all day long, so it doesn't have to be a total mint restoration. I just don't want the cracks to spread! Thanks in advance for any advice you have about this.
usnmars 136 Posted December 2, 2010 I like devcon epoxy. Post a pic of the cracks, and i will give you a specific way to fix them.
axeman_g 128 Posted December 2, 2010 If these are small, extraneous cracks, Gorilla Glue applied a little at a time with a toothpick. Then use a cloth and alchohol to wipe off excess that foams out of the crack until it stops foaming. Then let it sit about 48 hours. If you really take your time, you will not notice the repair. I have done it to an old Sweet 16. If these are bigger cracks that are across stress areas... same process but with tiny brad nail through the crack if possible. If not possible new stock pieces. tbtrout 141 Posted December 2, 2010 I second the Devcon epoxy.
NJ609 22 Posted December 2, 2010 I will try to post some pics tonight. One is a shallow but wide "tear" in the wood. The other is a sharp crack near the receiver, but it's a .22 so I'm not worried about it blowing apart. I think both will definitely require epoxy... axeman_g 128 Posted December 2, 2010 Oh... hey my bad. I thought this was an old shotgun. I think USNMARS suggestions would be best then based on your description.
NJ609 22 Posted December 2, 2010 Shotgun: It's a shallow "shave" type crack, not very deep it seems. Rifle: Pretty deep and goes on for a bit, I will probably have to remove the barrel etc for this...
NJ609 22 Posted December 9, 2010 I'm thinking after the epoxy I should steel wool the area down and use this: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=42731/sku/Matte_Clear Or... Do I just say the heck with it and refinish the whole stock with this stuff? I'd call that stage two... Any advice would be welcomed for the "post crack fix" part of this project as well. aguilar64 9 Posted December 13, 2010 If you value your gun and want to have it done right, give George Carell a call (610) 588-0199, he does wood repairs and is not expensive.
