Recommended Posts

Ft miflin, right outside of philadelphia PA.

There will be an open to the public WWII event on the 9th. Not huge, but always a more interesting battle than the usual fields of death. We storm the fort, blast through the gate, get pushed back etc etc.

Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia, PA

April 9, 2011

The 78th U.S. Infantry Division WW II Living History Association and Fort Mifflin on the Delaware invite you to attend our World War II Weekend, “Operation Overlord,” Assault on Vierville. With the fort being transformed into “Fortress Europe”, the allied forces, just off of the Delaware River Beachhead, will try to push the axis forces from the fort.

There are two public battles, 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, with living history displays and tours of the Allied and Axis barracks and casemates throughout the day. At this spring event we encourage your field displays and Veterans will also be in attendance in the Map Room for round table discussions. A Re-enactor Tactical will also be scheduled for late afternoon in the High Battery wooded area.

Also provided as a part of your registration fee is a Continental breakfast in the morning along with lunch and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast Sunday morning for those spending the weekend at the Fort.

Operation Overlord

“Operation Overlord” began on the night of June 5, 1944 with an airborne assault on Hitler’s “Fortress Europe.” The Allied Airborne elements parachuted, or glided, behind enemy lines to destroy enemy troops, hold off reinforcements sent to the beaches and capture key objectives.

The village of Vierville-sur-Mer was located inland of the Omaha Beach draw designated as Dog One. Around 10:00 a.m. on the morning of June 6, 1944 Vierville was taken by members of the 29th Infantry Division. The soldiers had fought their way up the bluffs on Omaha Beach and had approached the village from the east; troops attempting to move around the village's perimeter encountered enemy resistance. Company C of the 2nd Ranger Battalion had been given two possible plans on D-Day, the first of which involved passing through Vierville along with Company A of the 29th Infantry Division. When Company C landed they were unable to contact Company A, which had quickly suffered severe casualties, so Ranger Captain Ralph Goranson initiated his contingency plan and directed his men to scale nearby cliffs and proceed directly to their target, a German strongpoint at Point et Raz de la Percee.

Experience the history of the Fort, 14 restored historic structures constructed from 1778 to 1875, including Enlisted Barracks, Officer’s Quarters, Blacksmith Shop and underground casemates. Fort Mifflin is situated on the beautiful banks of the Delaware River.
