Malaysian 7.62x51 ammo sucks

Recommended Posts

I had the opportunity to test out about 10 different handloads, 2 different millsurp loads, and 3 commercial loads today with my M1A. I could not even get a half decent group (about 10 inches at 100yds) with the Malaysian surplus I have. On a 10 shot string it had a velocity variation of over 300 fps. There is not a good source for this ammo rite now but if it does become available again thats the deal.

Also, FWIW, the german DAG ammo shot a better group (3.5 inches) than Federal 168gr OTM ammo did (4 inches) and was more consistant on the chrono. That ammo has a bad name for corrosion. Go figure.

The best group and lowest variation where my own loads. Sierra HPBT 168gr bullets on Varget powder in Lake City brass (3.5 inches). They only had a 30fps variation. I do all my shooting with iron sights, thats why the groups are as large as they are. So, thats what I learned today

Ha! I havent tried Paki ammo yet. If anyone ever goes to war with Malaysia they wont have to worry about getting shot, thats for sure....I dont now what to do with this stuff. I have abot 1000 rounds left. I cant even reload the brass....stupid berdan primed brass......

It's blasting ammo, plain and simple. Bring a steel plate and see how often you can ring the bell. Normally I go to 240 with iron sights on my M1A. Sounds like you are stuck at 100 yards if you want to hit it 50% of the time.

Thanks for the heads up. My plinking .308 right now of choice is some white box Privi. Seems to work really well for the M1A.

This is my go-to combo for .308 accuracy hand loads in my BA, though I use Lapua and Remington brass.

I have found that me semi-autos in 308 (M1A & PTR91KC) like the lighter stuff better. My Savage Model 10 PC likes it heavier.

I seem to get the best accuracy out of 175gr bullet. The German surpluss and the mali is 149gr. i would like to say thats the problem with it but the german ammo groups pretty nicely.

Who knows... Im gonna pull a few of those malaysain rounds apart and measure and weigh everything. After that im gonna cut the bullet in half to see whats inside it.

I bought Ken's Malaysian 7.62x51 and shot it at Central Jersey today in my PTR91 (HK91 clone). All I can say is that it works great in a short barrel gun. I had someone spotting me and I went 20 for 20 on steel at 150 yards with it.
