pjd832 146 Posted January 1, 2013 Im throwing in the towel and looking for help now lol...I thought it would be easy enough... Slowly grind the weld until the pin falls out .. Like on YouTube lol... Well I did that and I saw the pin.... Tried a VERY strong magnet and lightly tapping at the same time...and repeated over and over to no avail an am to the threads and it still won't turn.... It's a factory installed birdcage brake on a windham weaponry carbine length 556 if that means anything... Advice/reccomendations of someone close to Salem county... BleedingOrange36 0 Posted January 1, 2013 Maybe try to heat it up. Depending on the pin used it may allow the brake to expand at a faster rate than the pin, thus allowing the pin to loosen up.
PK90 3,573 Posted January 1, 2013 Cut it off.
pjd832 146 Posted January 1, 2013 Tried the heat already no bueno.... I have done this before and just dremmel till pin is wiggly strong magnet it pops out remove and reinstall and pin new brake.... This is crazy... I think I'm into the barrel threads... Unless there's a bushing inside the windham installed birdcage
BleedingOrange36 0 Posted January 1, 2013 Cut it off. I would have to say that might be your best bet.
twong11219 0 Posted January 1, 2013 If you still want to take another crack at it, try drilling a hole in the pin and use a screw extractor to see if you can break what's ever bonding it in. Sorry, don't know any smiths in your area.
pjd832 146 Posted January 1, 2013 Ok birdcage cut off turns out it was double pinned.... Top and bottom.... Now it's off but the barrel has what appears to be a threaded bushing on it making it too big for the pws fsc556 I'm trying to put on... Is this right I've never had a bushing on it before
pjd832 146 Posted January 1, 2013 Well the answer is yes if you ever come across a windham weaponry factory installed birdcage ... It's double pinned top and bottom... And there is a bushing on the barrel to make it larger for some odd reason lol

PK90 3,573 Posted January 1, 2013 Does your FSC have a hole in it? The new ones do. BTW, they must be made of some sort of super hard steel. Good luck.
Shane45 807 Posted January 1, 2013 PK I noticed that myself! Ive done several PWS brakes with no problem at all. So much so I stopped bothering using Carbide bits on them. But this last one....OUCH! It was hard as F.

pjd832 146 Posted January 1, 2013 Yes pk it had a hole ......once I got the old one off (2 pins not one) the new one was easy to pin/fill once I finally found the right combo of shims to get the rotation correct lol
