Rare 1903

Here is a 1903 I picked up yesterday but I had something special waiting for it. Check it out and take a few guesses at:

A. How many does it hold?

B. What is it's purpose or history.

 

Before I get a bunch of dumb replies... 2C39-1(y)"Large capacity ammunition magazine" means a box, drum, tube or other container which is capable of holding more than 15 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously and directly therefrom into a semi-automatic firearm."

Now I will tell you now that in no way shape or form can it fixed to any other gun except a Springfield 1903. No it is NOT a BAR mag. I will provide more info as the comments flow in!

I am not as confident with this question.

 

25 rounders were a variant made for air crews.

 

20 rounders were a modification made in the field using BAR mags?
