should kids have their own BOB?

Recommended Posts

I guess the question is pretty much self explanatory.  Like most on this forum I have a wife and a couple of kids, I have 2 boys, 12 and 5. From a BOB perspective, I would have one and my wife would have one, but how about the kids?  Do they have their own or do I and my wife have supplies for them in our bags?  I don't see a problem with the 12 year old carrying a backpack, but the 5 year old is a different story.

What do you guys think?

Every able person in your group should have a bag based on their capability. For your youngest have his bag carry a change of clothes and a few snacks food and drink. Also maybe a small led flash light and whistle.  Your older son same as the other bag plus some extra water and food for them both. Remember the bags are only ment to get you from where ever you are to a safe location. Hope this helps.

How far do you think you'll get with a twelve year old, not to mention a five year old in tow carrying supplies, with starving zombie hordes nipping at your heels?

Are you expecting an ideal bugout situation like this family hike:

Or maybe dancing your way across the Poconos:

Not thinking about zombie hordes yet, if the zombies come we will all drop our BOBs and run like hell, .308 in one hand and 5 year old in the other, commando style  .  But in all seriousness I was thinking more about a natural disaster type of situation and we would have to evacuate for a few days.

10 miles a day over open terrain is the standard requirement according to the field manual.

Yeah, I know, but it's hard to think of such a scenario that can't be described better by the term "going to cousin Vito's for a few days" than "bugging out," where a suitcase would not serve you better than a bugout bag stuffed with astronaut food, bottled water, and ammo. You can put those into a suitcase as well.

If it's so dire that you have to leave on foot you're probably already too late. Hell, people in Staten Island could have driven over to Bayonne and stayed at a Red Roof Inn during Sandy if they'd driven; once you couldn't drive forget it. Nukes? C'mon. Tornadoes too unpredictable. Disease? Why would you be better off during an Ebola epidemic in a lean-to in Frein territory than in your basement? Or walking alongside Rte. 46 than in your apartment where you'll still have water? And you're going to take a, $30k, $40k, $75k bet on a second location that will almost certainly get vandalized? And it will be far away enough for times of trouble, but close enough for you to walk there without getting killed in the process? That has electricity or water when your home 30 miles away doesn't? How will you know? How will you know it hasn't been turned into a meth lab?

Prepping I understand. A lot of smart people do it. It's running away with a baby who's too big to carry and too small to last more than a few hours on his own steam that I don't get. I guess I don't get the notion of bugging out on any level. It's kind of a cozy fantasy that I'll admit to entertaining now and again; something to think about during increasingly frequent bouts of insomnia. But not very consistent with the reality of disaster scenarios.

    • I took down a deck that was attached to the house with a ledger board.  That area now needs to be re-sided.   Its a tough predicament because its such a small job, its only like 24 inches high by about 12 feet wide.  After 3 phone calls last fall i actualy got the guy who built the house to come by, he said "sure, i can do it when i get some down time".   I havent heard from him since. i get it.  its a small job.  I'm a pretty handy guy and out of desperation i could probably watch youtube videos and figure out how to patch this by myself but i think id get lost on trying to match the color and i only need a small amount of material i'd have no idea where to buy a small amount.  So i'm gonna try here if anybody knows a vinyl siding company who wouldnt mind doing what i suppose would be a 30 minute job.  I am fully aware that i would need to have his fee make it worth while for the project even though its such a small patch job.
    • Thanks for the offer @High Exposure and hope you’re doing well.  I’ll be back in just under 2 weeks and we can all work something out.
    • I bought the stainless Rossi lever carbine in .357 a few years ago, to match a bush rifle caliber to my revolvers. I'm pretty sure I paid under $400 at the time. Shoots sweet, reliable, more than accurate enough. When I was shopping for it I kept running into comments on gun forums (not this one, iirc) criticiziing the action compared to the Henrys, but I've never shot a Henry lever gun, and I guess I'm too dumb to notice any issues.
    • Interesting discussion. I have plenty of large, tall trees that I could affix antennae elements to . But then I'd be at the mercy of wind and lightning. Of course, a falling tree could easily take out an adjacent tower as well :-) My biggest mental obstacle with installing a tower is how to get all the pieces up the slope to the install point. A new tower is no doubt a pretty big expense, but I see them on FB Marketplace regularly for fairly cheap, provided the buyer takes the thing down.
    • Nice grab Stu! Beat me to it. @Mr.Stu And @DirtyDigz - Rumson is the next town over from me (maybe a 5 minute drive). I can be a middle-man and grab it if you can’t find a time that works for you guys and @Rob0115.
