A question on stocks

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm in the beginning stages of building an AR. Right now I'm just researching and getting a parts list ready. My question is about stocks.

I'm sure this has been discussed and answered to death, but I've Googled and searched forums about it but I'm still unclear on the subject.

Is it true that any stock can be used as long as it's ability to be adjusted is eliminated?

For example, Magpul ACS and UBR. As long as they are pinned and permanent I'm assuming they are gtg?

How about something like a Magpul PRS? Would pinning it down and removing the ability the adjust the cheek weld make it gtg? (Not that I would do that. Just looking for some clarity.)

Thanks.

The stock must not have the ability to collapse or fold. If it is pinned or such you're gtg. As far as the PRS it is generally considered gtg as is since it doesn't actually collapse. It only adjusts from the back or top

Yes, IMO, the PRS and the Luth-AR are fixed stocks. They have and adjustable cheek weld and buttpad, but the actually stock is fixed to the buffer tube.

There are three basic types.  Fixed, Adjustable and Collapsible or Folding.

Collapsible stocks, such as the Magpul MOE CTR & STR that collapse down for storage or transportation must be pinned to immobilize the stock.  If you plan on getting one of these types you will have to figure out what position works best for you and then pin the stock.  Long gun stocks are fitted to a shooter based on LOP (Length of Pull) which is the distance from the trigger to the buttplate.  You may have an adjustable cheek rest on this type of stock and the rest does NOT have to be pinned or immobilized.  AFIK, there is no NJ legal folding stock, however folding stocks may become legal if they are permanently fixed into the extended position.

Adjustable stocks, such as the ones used in competition, where the cheek rest and butt plate are adjustable ARE NOT collapsible stocks.if the stock is otherwise immobile.  Adjustable stocks are typically the fixed type, but some collapsible stocks do offer limited adjustment features.

Fixed stocks, such as the A2 or the ARFX Skeleton stocks, are not adjustable in any way and are 100% compliant.

EDIT:  Actually, there are two basic types, Fixed and Collapsible, either may be adjustable.

There is no need to be "permanent". That word is reserved for magazines.

Well, the word permanent is not used in it's most strict context.  With the right tools almost anything can be undone.  In addition to magazines it also applies to devices attached to threaded muzzles.  Even a thoroughly welded brake/comp can be removed.
