  1. Don't waste time and energy trying to chase them on social media and such. The way to thwart these people is to disrupt their livelihood and that of their supporters. When people like Mayor Scott Jackson and Fire Chief Denis McCarthy start losing elections due to the conspicuous efforts of 2A supporters, the power structure of the anti movement will wither. This is all they understand. Politicians are riding the gun control tide to further their careers. When this tactic backfires and they start losing their jobs, the rest of their ilk will scurry from it like the corrupt rats they are. Just look at how many democrats have distanced themselves from the very Obama policies they endorsed a few years back. Now that things like Obamacare have experienced a huge backlash, they see any association with it to be a liability. We must make association with anti-2A policies the same. Big businesses must be conspicuously rewarded by us for resisting the anti's efforts and just as conspicuously punished by us when they cave. There is a very small, hardcore group of crusaders who are enabled by those who wish to gain something. When they see that this is a rocky road, they'll get off at the next exit.
  2. I've been approached with a job opportunity in Grand Rapids. I never really considered MI at all, but since I would retain my NJ salary and my company offers a generous relocation package, I figured I should at least look into it. I understand the area outside the actual city tends to be conservative which is a good thing. I would probably want to settle within 30 miles of the city itself. Anyone spend any time in the area? I'd really like to get a little intelligence on the place from people other than the ones trying to convince me to take the job.
  3. My cynical take on it? Because if you make money treating the disease it would not be in your best interests to take action to cure it.
  4. Considering it is finally cold out there, I thought it might be helpful if those of us using oil shared what we are paying and from whom. I just put an order in today on www.codoil.com at $2.39/gallon. I pay COD and don't use the auto-delivery service. My neighbor filled up yesterday at $2.84/gallon from a "full-service" company.
  5. I wonder exactly how many "thefts and losses" of firearms occurred involving LE weapons and those from evidence lockers?
  6. I wouldn't expect someone so close to such a tragic event to be thinking all that rationally.
  7. This would be my biggest issue. While you can never be completely sure when buying used, a purchase from a pawn shop 40 years ago and possession by someone who is ignorant/apathetic about the laws where he lives leaves too many unanswered questions for me. Is there something special about this gun? Ruger .357's are not exactly scarce.
  8. Enjoy yourself. Asheville is on my short list.
  9. The genie is out of the bottle. We will never go back, so might as well use the tools at hand to best benefit yourself. Lamenting days gone by won't do a thing.
  10. If you pay your balance in full every month, credit cards are the wisest way to spend. You get to float your money for a month, you get certain protections such as extended warranties and the ability to dispute charges after the fact, you get an easy way to see where you are spending you money and if your wallet is stolen or lost there's not cash to worry about. Don't forget cash back rewards and points for purchases. If you use a card to spend money you don't have, don't blame the banks. That's on you.
  11. The Canadians are way ahead of us on this problem. I spent a few days in Niagara Falls recently and I don't believe my credit card left my hand more than the one time I checked into the hotel. Meals, retail...all handed me a small device that I swiped myself, entered any applicable tip and hit OK for authorization. It then printed my receipt. Not once did the employee even see my card up close. Sad it has to come to this, but it is so easy to clone a card that allowing your card out of your sight is just too risky. I suppose that whatever wireless system these devices us is vulnerable as well but it seems a lot easier to secure than a card that disappears in a restaurant for several minutes.
  12. So you're saying that this machine requires you to enter your address to get a key made? I don't know any way a retailer would have access to your address through a normal credit card transaction.
  13. Why would the machine have the cardholder's address?
  14. Depending on the timing, I may be able to give you a lift to York. PM me if you want to discuss.
  15. I don't really get what you are on about here. Do you really think that a person has to accept responsibility in order to suffer the consequences? There are plenty of people in prison who show no remorse for their crimes and deny guilt despite a mountain of evidence. Are they not facing justice? Were they not tried and convicted? So yes, anyone that accidentally shoots you will be subject to justice whether or not he accepts his responsibility. In NJ especially, it is highly unlikely that LE will just look the other way.
  16. Can you explain what you mean by this statement? Sounds to me like you think my constitutionally guaranteed right should be further infringed upon on the off chance that someone's negligence with a firearm causes you harm. Your argument doesn't seem too far from the, "If it saves just one child's life..." crap the anti's use. If you or yours are ever killed or injured by someone who is drunk should I have to be trained before buying a beer? If you or yours are ever killed or injured by a fire cause by a neighbor smoking in bed will I have to be trained before I can buy a cigarette or a match? I have a dog. Do I need to attend a mandatory training class because some people are negligent and their dogs hurt people? How about my cell phone. Some people text while driving and cause fatal crashes. Better get a mandatory cell phone training class going pronto. So, what exactly do you mean by "accept responsibility" when I point out that the law already enforces responsibility and you respond with "...good luck with that..." Isn't that exactly what you asked for in post #132? Is it any wonder that 2A rights are in such a sorry state in NJ when supposed 2A supporters are OK with further attempts to restrict our rights?
  17. No one has to "accept responsibility" for their own negligence. Liability is a matter of law and not subject to that party's agreement. Same goes for criminal charges. Life is an inherently dangerous endeavor. People do stupid things and sometimes that results in tragedy. This is what people need to accept. Stop trying to bubble wrap the world.
  18. Why would anyone want to drive past an unknown threat, exposing themselves to danger? The cones and the parked car were visible in this guy's low beams at a reasonably safe distance. Seems to me that the smartest thing to do would be to stop there, hit the brights and get a good look at the situation. I would rather back up some after seeing some skell in a hoodie then drive past him, exposing my flank to god know what. The best way to deal with danger is to prevent being in it in the first place. Additionally, not knowing what was beyond those cones makes jamming on the gas a pretty bad idea. No way to know if there is another car or some other obstruction to stop you in your tracks. Caution always wins over bravado.
  19. We can only hope it goes this way. Grandfathering would be a great tactic to make sure that the more self-centered members of the gun community go along with further stripping rights from everyone else. I guarantee that a number of our members would go along with anything as long as it doesn't affect them personally. "I get to keep mine? Cool. Everyone else can go pound sand." "If it's not a shotgun, I don't care." "I don't have the need for more than 3 rounds of anything, so no one else should either." And these are people who claim to be 2A supporters! At least by subjecting everyone to the same restrictions, it may force some of these misguided individuals to take a stand. As a community, the gun owners of NJ are fragmented and the anti's know exactly how to take advantage of that. We got where we are today by generations of "reasonable" gun owners giving in to anti-gun legislation. Whether by apathy or active support, they have enabled the antis to advance to this point. There is nothing "reasonable" about surrendering fundamental rights. Don't give an inch! Period. We need to fight back the existing infringements, not encourage new ones. The results of yesterday's election are less than encouraging...
  20. A guy who calls himself "Candyman" stiffs the trick or treaters? For shame...
  21. I like the idea in theory, but it seems like a complete waste of time to me. From all the pictures I have ever seen, 99% of what shows up to be sold is utter garbage you wouldn't want for free. For the few guns that are actually worth owning, you will generally be dealing with someone who knows zero about guns. If they did, they wouldn't be selling it to the state for peanuts. Try walking up to that person, a total stranger and offering to buy it legally on the spot. How many of these people would be willing to trust you that the deal is legal? More likely they will actually report you to the first authority figure that walks by. Also, the seller may very likely be an anti. They WANT to see the gun destroyed, not sell it to you. Again, they can be expected to try to turn you in for your perfectly legal offer. So let's say you find te unicorn. A desirable gun in good condition with an owner who is willing to sell it to you. Now you run the considerable risk that the gun is stolen or was used in a crime. If you think you can tell by looking at someone, you are out of your mind. Can't forget the very real possibility that the agents ofthe state will harass you or worse. Anyone who thinks that because it's legal means the state will leave you alone...refer to my last statement in the paragraph above. All that said, I wish anyone attempting this the best of luck. Let us know how you do.
  22. Get the .357. I have taken a good number of people shooting and nothing puts a smile on their face like shooting magnums. That's the gun these people talk about after the fact, not the various 9mm pistols I have them shoot. The 1911 comes in a close second. If it's a range toy you're looking for, get the magnum.
  23. Actually, I am fine with paying into my town's public school system, even though my daughter does not go there. In theory, anyway. It is good for everyone that each new generation gets educated to a reasonable standard. My issue is that my taxes are determined based upon the alleged value of my home. Why? Someone please show me how the value of my home has any bearing on the cost to operate the town. It infuriates me that I pay more than people who cost the town more just because I have a tenth of an acre more property or one more bedroom. How about a flat tax? Put together the budget, triple it to cover the corruption, graft, inefficiency and plain incompetence of the government and divide it by number of households in the town. Done. I will still be paying more than my cost, but at least I won't be paying more than the people that disproportionately drain the township. The current system is lot more Marxist than Jeffersonian.
  24. I object to the whole concept of taxes being based upon the supposed value of my home. I have spent time and money (employing contractors and buying supplies from local businesses) and I have to pay MORE than the guy down the street who lets his house go to pot thereby decreasing property values for the rest of us? People who cram 4 or 5 public school attending kids into a crackerbox should pay less than me because my house is on a bigger piece of land? How does the "value" of my home impact the cost of running the town? I'm already subsidizing people who have never heard of a condom (or a lawnmower for that matter) why do they get to pay LESS than me despite consuming a much greater share of the town budget? The whole system is another wealth distribution scheme. It's not designed or intended to be fair and equitable, so it never will be.
  25. Following the logic of some here, there should be mandatory training required before someone can purchase the majority of the tools at Home Depot. It saddens me that supposed 2A supporters would be ok with any additional legal restrictions on our rights. This is why "rally the troops" never seems to work in NJ. People intent on being reasonable simply don't understand that the anti's are anything but reasonable. They know their end game and all these things are designed to win them their goal. Resist at every turn an counter with an aggressive offense. They can afford to lose a thousand times and keep trying. Once we lose, the game is over.
