If the cops didn't shoot and the guy shot someone else everyone would be bitching that the cops didn't do their job. That was a no win situation for all involved. That is not entirely correct. The law says "hollow nose or dum-dum bullet." NJ Supreme Court has ruled that dum-dum is plain in meaning. Merriam-Webster The Dum Dum aresenal, for which the bullets were named, made both hollow point and soft point bullets designed to expand. When dealing with home defense, 2C:39-4c is the appropriate section to cite, and it has quite a different meaning.

I have to agree with Bones here. In a state where open carrying a handgun or long gun is not unlawful, the mere presence of a firearm does not give the police the right to "check and make sure everything is ok." To say that would be to say the police can pull over any car they wish, just to make sure that you have a valid DL.

My question would be do those laws apply in this circumstance? If the PD is using the employer as a reference (unlawfully, mind you), it's not a simple employment verification, it is part of an investigation.

How would it be difficult to argue they are antique cannons? 2C:39-6d 2 exempts possession of an antique cannon so long as you have a FID, among other things. 3 exempts transport to/from place of purchase and repair. 4 exempts loading and firing so long as it is at a range or has CLEO approval. 5 exempts transport to a range or an event that has CLEO approval.

IANAL... Is there no ammo in the gun (chamber/cylinder empty and magazine, if present, empty)? Is the gun EITHER cased in some fashion OR locked in the trunk? Can you legally posses the gun during your trip (handguns to/from range, etc)? If you answer yes, you're good... Its not that complicated, get acquainted with 2C:39 and 2C:58. Specifically 2C:39-6g... hell I even quoted it above, but here it is again. EDIT - If you're concerned about a cop not knowing the law, and he finds out you have guns, you're probably screwed anyway. If he doesn't know the requirements of 2C:39-6g, he's likely making it up as he goes along and if it doesn't "seem right" to him, you're wrong...
