  1. I'm not blaming the police, at least not the individual officers. We're mostly to blame for wanting the government to take care of us no matter what the cost. The government will always try to take more and more control of the people. I don't think it's a conspiracy. They (our elected leaders) believe we (the people that elected them) are idiots and dangerous and that we need them to think for us and control us. We have collectively let them do just that. If I was an officer making entry in an unknown situation, I would want the best weapons, best armor, and every technology that would keep me alive. But with that power comes the risk of hurting or killing people unnecessarily and sometimes killing innocent people or the wrong people. The militarization of the police has resulted in the deaths and serious injury to lots of innocent people across the country. Maybe the collateral damage is worth getting these 6 plants out of some guys' basement. It isn't to me.
  2. Whenever the police are better armed than the citizenry is allowed to be, the balance of power is wrong. I realize that's not a normal view in most places in our "modern" society. I'm surprised it's not the common belief here. Back to the original post about the man raided for half a dozen pot plants in his basement. He was going to come out of his house and go to work at some point. He could have easily been picked up in lots of other places without needing a swat team and 7 people getting shot. If a no-knock raid was warranted, a search warrant to find his 6 pot plants could have been gotten after he was peacefully picked up in a traffic stop, getting out of his car at work, or in the Walmart parking lot.
  3. Nice. My vote for next is getting rid of Sweeney. NJ Politicians need to learn that there are consequenses. If Sweeney, who's district is full of hunters, is reelected after sponsoring an anti-gun bill, no NJ politician will ever fear trampling our rights. If Sweeney is reelected, wait to see what gun laws are passed next year. We'll loose everything in 5 years.
  4. yes, by federal law. I had one in the 80's before they were illegal. End opener, very cool.
  5. One more note: I'd expect a scope out of the box to hit the paper or at least be pretty close to it. If you're way way off, I'd look at the scope and it's mounts before doing anything else. I have a .22 varmint gun that I use a lot out here in the country. I spend about an hour sighting in the scope every spring. I sighted it in a couple of years ago and was missing everything I shot at when I actually needed it. I sighted it in again and the next time I got it out, I had the same problem. So I sighted it in again. After the third time trying, I noticed that the screw on the rear scope mount was loose and the tube could wiggle. Duh moment.
  6. I'm seriously considering adding a Chiappa 1911-22 to my small collection. It would be my "cheap to shoot" gun. I have one 22 pistol but it's a tiny pocket pistol and it's not a lot of fun to shoot. The price is what has peeked my interest in this particular 1911-22 but at under $300, It's also low enough that I'm wondering if it's junk. You usually get what you pay for. There aren't a lot of reviews online other than magazine articles. The reviews of this pistol are good but I'm always skeptical when magazines review advertiser's products. Does anybody own this? Worth buying or should I avoid it?
  7. I've sighted in by starting at 100 yds lots of times. Usually, you start out at least on the paper. If you don't, you should be able to tell if you're left, right, high, or low and within a couple of shots adjust enough to be on the paper. If you know which nut you hit on your target stand, you know what way you need to move to get to your bulls eye. Remember that if your scope is a 1/2 MOA per click, that's 2 clicks for every inch you need to move your impact point at 100 yds. If it's 1/4 MOA, that's 4 clicks for every inch you need to move your point of aim at 100 yds. For example, lets say you have a scope that's 1/4 MOA per click. That's 1/4" per click at 100 yds or 4 clicks per inch. So if you start out hitting 15" left, you need to do 15 x 4 = 60 clicks to the right to get where you want to be. And I never sight in with single shots, always 3 shot groups. It's too easy to have one bad shot and think you're hitting somewhere that you aren't and mess up all the progress you've made. If you do decide to sight in at a distance closer than 100 yds, you can sight in at 25 or 50 yds and still be pretty darn close at 100 yds by adjusting a couple of inches for bullet drop. Several websites let you calculate bullet drop at different distances based on all sorts of different parameters. While you're doing that, also get some figures for wind drift. Sighting in on a windy day can really mess things up too.
  8. Detroit will be "too big to fail". This is another opportunity to inject brand new money into the economy - which was the real purpose of the TARP bail outs. Dump a few billion in newly minted bills into Detroit and suddenly Detroit has more money to spend then it knows what to do with. They buy new vehicles for the roads dept, new desks for offices, the get the elevators fixed, and add office staff. Detroit's economy temporarily takes an upturn. The president declares himself savior. Your dollar becomes worth even less. The Fed continues to purchase mortgages and bonds as fast as they can to (1) inject even more money into the economy while (2) temporarily and artificially keeping stock market prices high by buying up all of the available mortgages and bonds (creating scarcity of investments - what the Fed cryptically calls "Quantitative Easing"). All they have to do is keep this teetering country from tipping over until after the next election. I'm not sure they can do it.
  9. A&A used to have this. None of my local shops do. I know what I want and I like life to be easy. I don't want to make a dozen phone calls or drive to a dozen stores. Are there any shops - specifically in south jersey that have their inventory online?
  10. According to several posts on the NJ2AS facebook page, several people including myself received our permits yesterday. I took the class April 27 so that's 78 days from class to delivery.
  11. I want 100% of my membership dues or donations to go to the fight. I know that they have done the statistics and figured out the way to raise the most money includes trinkets but I don't want the knife, hat, free CDs or dozens of mailers. They must spend twice my dues on sending me junk every year. There should be an opt out for those of us that don't join for freebees.
  12. Aim's been out of stock on the mosin's for about a month. Any place left to get one ( not a sniper) for close to the $120 Aim was charging?
  13. For a brief time a few years ago (maybe a week), the federal govt announced that carry was now legal in federal parks. They immediately added that it was legal to carry as long as you were following the rules of the state the park is located in. So I guess carry was legal in a few places in NJ for about a week once.
  14. No lights, no lasers for me. I know my home, even in the dark. I want the advantage. If I'm walking around in the dark with a beacon, I go from having an advantage to being an easy to hit target.
  15. I've bought a lot off equipment from supercircuits.com I've actually bought some covert mobile video equipment from them but did not use it in vehicles - With a 12 V power supply, the vehicle stuff is usually stand alone, full featured, and very compact and a good choice for portable covert video. My experience has been that the lower end stuff (under $300) is all junk and won't work when you need it. The higher end stuff does not include the hard drive - these are extra. A decent mobile DVR is probably going to cost $600+. Add a covert camera and you're around $800 in equipment. Probably why cell phones are the way to go. It's also been my experience that covert video never gets what you want. In dozens of well planned scenarios, only a hand full resulted in anything decent. The action always happens off camera, the action happened 1 hour before the camera was installed or 1 hour after you gave up and removed it, the action moved to the room next door, somebody who isn't involved finds your equipment, a power outage takes out the camera, the action happens exactly where and when you expected and everything would be on tape if the spider hadn't parked himself over the warm camera lens. something always goes wrong.
  16. I just discovered Discount Ammo and Guns at the Pole Tavern Circle in Monroeville (Pole Tavern). Not a big store, not a huge selection but I took my time looking at the handguns they had and they took the time to let me browse. I had half a dozen models on the counter in front of me and there was no hurry, no attitude, no pressure. Seemed like a couple of nice guys behind the counter. Their website obviously has guns they can order from a distributor instead of what they have on hand. They probably had 40 or 50 handguns and two dozen long guns. Not a big selection but I found what I wanted. I think I've settled on my next pistol and will be returning there to make the purchase as soon as my 30 day OGM wait is up.
  17. Absolutely, I'm over thinking it. I grew up with guns, a lot of guns. I still shoot in my back yard several times a week. Took my 6 year old to a gun shop today and he proudly told the counter guys about the gun's he's shot with dad. Down here in deep south jersey, it's more like Kentucky than New York and we're pretty much isolated from the big brother state. Even the Troopers here are gun friendly. The local elementary school colors are hunter orange and camo (not kidding). And until very recently, I was oblivious to the issues that other gun owners in NJ face. Getting FIDs and P2Ps is a pain but other than that, the concept that I own guns at my peril was silly to me. But my experience obviously isn't the same as the rest of the state and that worries me...a little. And even if I'm over thinking it, all it takes is one police officer, one prosecutor, and one jury that believe "place" means "state" and somebody could do real time. It won't deter me from ccw out of state but it is something to consider.
  18. I always verify that a gun is unloaded as soon as I touch it. I've been in lots of gun shops that do not rack the gun before handing it to a customer. In fact, most of the gun shops I've been in do not. Most of the gun shops I've been in also aren't too careful about rule #2 - "always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction" and I've been swept with the muzzle lots of times.
  19. I'm doing some traveling this summer and plan to utilize my brandy new UT CCW permit as soon as I cross into America. I've been carefully researching ccw laws and federal transport laws just to be sure I'm not going to get myself into any trouble. Growing up in the PRNJ really makes a person paranoid. I've been looking into FOPA - Firearms Owners Protection Act. FOPA says in part : If "place" means the specific place I leave from - my house - I'm okay because I can lawfully possess and carry in my house. Unfortunately, I've found legal opinions that "place" means state. I can't lawfully possess and carry in my state and if "place" really means "state", It would seem that NJ residents are not protected by FOPA at all.
  20. There is an appeal process if you are denied. You need to follow the process. Applying again after 7 months is not the process. If you have a felony conviction, it's possible you do not qualify and there's nothign the police can do about it. You may need to get that expunged first - if car theft can be expunged.
  21. I've been able to get whatever I needed, you just need a little patience. If you've got a couple of months before you can pick up your gun, you'll be able to stock up on anything, even 22. Check out gunbot.net. This site checks the other sites and lets you know what's available where. I've bought enough 22 and other stuff to keep me going. The prices are a premium, mostly because you're paying shipping too but if you wait for the right deal, it's not awful. I end up finding a deal worth buying about every 2 weeks and I'll buy whatever the seller's limit is. I try to throw in some other items since I'm paying shipping anyway. Ammo is harder to find but it's out there if you're not in a hurry.
  22. My newest and currently my favorite. 45 colt/.410 Taurus Judge 3" cylinder with 3" barrel. Admittedly, it's the spork of the shooting world, not the best spoon, not the best fork, but it's still a lot of fun to shoot. It's already dispatched one ground hog, half a box of clay pigeons, several paper targets, milk jugs, an overripe cantaloupe, and a couple of sheets of plywood (to pattern shot shells). Shooting 45 colt is more accurate than I had imagined for a 3 inch barrel but it's still a close range gun. .410 game loads pattern at about 20" at 15 yds. 3" 000 buck shot sends out five .36 caliber pellets - each with the same muzzle energy of a .380. The recoil is far less than I had imagined when shooting 2-1/2" .410 shells or 45 colt. 3" magnum .410 buckshot really kicks. The day I bought it, I took off a few hours from work to pick it up and stopped home to shoot a few rounds. After about 25 shots in a variety of ammo, I noticed my elbow hurting on the drive back to the job. All is good with the elbow but you feel the 3" buck. Not a practical gun but definitely a fun gun. I just wish it didn't cost $5 a minute to shoot. It probably won't be my first choice for ccw.
