  1. Welcome from Middletown as well.
  2. Also recommend you do some searching on YouTube. There are hundreds(thousands, perhaps) of ammo reviews there. Some include tests with ballistic gelatin and measure penetration.
  3. Am planning to go to Brink Armory in the morning to practice with my Mossberg shotgun and perhaps my 22LR pistol. I plan to arrive approx. 9:00 - 9:30 AM. Thought I'd post this in case anyone is also planning to be there. Would be nice to meet and introduce ourselves. regards, Art
  4. I stopped by Dick's Sporting Goods in Woodbridge at approx. 6:00 PM yesterday. I was surprised to see 6 boxes (500rds each at $39.99) of CCI 22LR #0035 on the shelf. So I picked up a box. (Limit of 1 per customer.) My understanding is that, when they do receive a shipment, it is usually sold out by noon. Hopefully this is a small indication that demand will ease a bit. -Art
  5. CageFighter: am curious. Where was the Walmart that you formerly purchased ammo at? I was under the impression that Walmarts in NJ did not sell ammo. I also have an order into Palmetto State Armory for 9mm and 22LR. This is my second time ordering from them. Would be good if those of you with orders pending with PSA would msg me. I'd be curious to compare how our respective orders are progressing. (Trying to not hijack this thread.) regards, Art
  6. As recommended above, use gunbot (.aka ammobot). It is an effective tool for finding ammo. I usually specify Sort by price, and show in stock only. As far as prices are concerned, you will have to decide for yourself what price point you find acceptable. As an example (YMMV); I recently purchased CCI 22LR Standard Velocity from "PSA" (Palmetto State Armory). I just placed another order for more. It can be found via ammobot or directly here--> http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ammunition/rimfire-ammunition/cci-standard-velocity-22-lr-50rds-0035.html. In this case, it's 11 cents per round plus shipping. Btw, my experience with PSA was fine. (Other's not so good based on online reviews.) No limit on the amount. You just need to be patient as they likely will take up to 5 days to ship. And expect your credit card to be charged immediately upon placing your order. Also, since 22LR is considered handgun ammo, immediately after placing my order via their website, I emailed them(at [email protected]) scanned copies of the front and back of my NJFID. It is not my intent to say PSA is better or worse than others. Only to emphasize the use of ammobot and the fact that PSA appears to have the above ammo in stock right now. In contrast, Cabela's had 22LR at 6 or 7 cents per round yesterday but limited the sale to 1 box)of 100) per day. In that case, the shipping cost makes it prohibitive and more of a hassle than it was worth to me. regards, Art
  7. I just called. I asked the operator to pass me to a governors aide and she did so. Another woman answered, confirmed she was an aide to the governor, and I then expressed my concerns about these three bills. I did state my name and town. She stated she would pass my concerns to the governor. Both women were polite. However had I not stated my name I doubt they would have asked. The fact they would not have asked makes me suspicious that it may all be a farce. I could have been anyone calling from anywhere.
  8. Thanks for the feedback. I hope to go target shooting next Sat morning. Am inclined to remove the barrel afterwards, apply Hoppes solvent liberally, and let it soak as suggested.
  9. Thanks for the suggestions (as well as the humor!). Will look into various products suggested above. So, the bottomline (for those of us that DO clean our shotguns, lol) is that I should expect to get it spotless. I.e., what I see in the barrel are likely not abrasions in the bore metal, but rather lingering dirt deposits. Correct?
  10. Hoping to get some guidance. (Did already search the forums.). Have owned a 22LR rifle and pistol for many years. After cleaning the firearms, the inside of the barrels always looked very clean and shiny/spotless. Recently purchased a Mossberg 590(#50668); my first shotgun The first time I shot it (25 rounds), I cleaned the barrel with Hopp's solvent, using bristle brush, patches, etc and finished with a light coat of oil. As above, barrel ended up looking clean and smooth in the inside. Went shooting last weekend and shot 82 rounds at the range(variety of 00Buck and slugs). Tried to clean the gun today and seem to be having a lot more trouble getting the inside of the barrel to be spotless. In various places, I am not sure if what I see is normal abrasion or I just have not been aggressive enough running solvent and bristle brush through it. So my question is, what is to be expected? Should bore always look smooth/shiny after cleaning? I.e. should I have been even more aggressive(ie more solvent, more brushing, etc.) OR is it normal for what looks like abrasion to appear due to wear from the shot, slugs, etc? Again, a newbie at shottys, so appreciate any guidance.
  11. I sent a two page letter (my own words) to the Governor earlier this week expressing my concerns on these various N.J. anti-gun bills and the anti 2nd Amendment efforts in general. Sent it via his website as well as USPO. Not sure it will see the light of day(the Governor has not yet called me back on my cell. (:-) ); but at least I feel good having tried. (Btw, my first ever letter to a governor.)
  12. I do respect the diversity of opinion. I suppose the key message is to shop around and go with whomever you find meets your needs based on the type of ammo you are seeking. I was merely sharing my experience with CTD in the context of shotgun ammo. I found their pricing to be competitive for the specific types I was seeking and the buying experience convenient. In contrast, their selection and pricing on 22LR was limited and expensive, so I didn't buy any.
  13. Wanted to contribute and share my experience ordering ammunition from CheaperThanDirt.com. I have placed several orders for 12 gauge shotgun ammunition(not handgun or rifle)over the past four months. In all cases, the service was excellent in all respects. No mention of NJFID needing to be supplied. (Perhaps because it was not handgun ammo.?) Shipments go out same day. They ship from a variety of warehouses, as indicated on their website. Warehouse "G" is in P.A. and the delivery arrived via UPS in two days. I believe warehouse "A" is in Texas. Those deliveries take about 4 days. In one instance, the shipment was short a quantity of what I ordered. The issue was immediately rectified by their customer service people who were very courteous. regards, Art
  14. Glockguy, appreciate you expressing your feelings above. In particular your mention of relocation is noteworthy. I have been traveling to Dallas, Texas weekly on business for the last three months. It has been a truly liberating and fun experience walking thru the firearm/hunting aisles at Bass Pro Shops, Academy Sporting Goods, talking with the staff, etc. Shelves full of ammo(mostly shotfun and rifle), watching people/families purchase firarms including "evil" AR15's, shelves stocked with high capacity magazines; ALL NO BIG DEAL. I have felt like I have been traveling from a repressive country(N.J.) to a free United States(Tx). As a life long NJ resident, truly sad. (Apologies if my post is in any way taking this thread off topic.)
  15. Ogfarmer, thanks for pointing out that UPS stores will not handle it. I checked and there is a UPS Customer Service Center at DFW Airport. Found it on the UPS website. Upon arriving there last week, did stop by and the UPS clerk confirmed, as many of you indicated above, that no problem shipping ammo. As it turned out, I didn't buy any. Did not find enough to make it worthwhile to go through the trouble of boxing/shipping it. However, going back this week via Newark Airport and plan to purchase up to the allowable limit of 11 lbs and bring it back in my checked luggage. Anticipate purchasing shotgun ammo, and if I am lucky enough to spot any, some 22LR. (If I were extremely lucky and found more, there is always the UPS option.) regards
  16. Thank you very much all for the quick responses. Agree not worth the risk. A dam shame. Will locate and check with a local UPS store while in Dallas this week. Then go shopping! (p.s. they are out of most common handgun calibers there too. Shelves mostly full of shotgun ammo and various rifle calibers. Also very entertaining seeing someone walk up to the counter, purchase an Sig-Saur AR-15 which was in stock, and be out of the store with their purchase in 20 minutes. Also shelves of high capacity magazines there for ready for purchase like bags of potato chips. Gotta love Texas!)) regards, Art
  17. Hope this is the right forum to ask this. Have searched on Google and here but could not find clarity on the following. Any input would be appreciated. I am a frequent business traveler to Texas. Very refreshing to be able to browse the aisles of ammunition(mostly shotgun) at sporting goods stores there. On my last trip several weeks ago, I flew from DFW to Newark with some shotgun ammo I purchased. As this was my first time doing so, I carefully researched the associated TSA and airline rules. Flew via American Airlines into Newark and encountered no issues. This coming week will be flying Delta Airlines via LaGuardia Airport(Queens, NYC) and would like to again bring home some ammo from Texas. I have extensively read the many online posts concerning the many NYC laws and PERILS of flying into, and especially out of, a NYC airport with a firearm and ammo. (Basically don't do it.) However, I will only be transporting ammunition (properly packed per TSA and airlines rules, less than 11 lbs, etc.), no firearm. Have not been able to find any mention of any special NYC restrictions against flying into NYC airport with just ammunition. Any feedback, links, etc that you could share in this regard would be appreciated. I really enjoy browsing the aisles in Texas and purchasing some ammo there, but don't want to be exposed to breaking any NYC laws upon my return. thanks, Art
  18. I recently purchased the TLR-1 HL and am extremely pleased with it. It is the first such light I have purchased. I purchased it for use on my new Mossberg 590 Shotgun(Model#50668). The lamp is extremely powerful and the spread of light seems about just right for home defense. It supports regular and strobe modes. Either of these modes can be activated either fulltime or just for as long as you hold the on/off lever. Purchased mine from Botach Tactical. To mount it, I purchased a LaserLyte Tri-Rail Mount(#LAA DPTRIR-140) from Adorama, a very reputable photography store in NYC that I have dealt with for many years. Undoubtedly, the strobe mode of this powerful light would truly be disorienting. It's build quality appears to be excellent(built like a tank).
  19. Much like MonmouthShooter, I also very recently purchased my first shotgun. It is a Mossberg 12 gauge, model #50668 (590-Special Purpose,8+1, ghost-ring sights, speedstock, 20" barrel). Have not fired it as yet. Would love to meetup with one or more of you at some point in the future. No doubt your guidance would be most valuable and appreciated. In the meantime, I plan to go BA first thing in the morning and have my first experience with it. Am certainly curious(and a bit apprehensive) to feel what the recoil will be like. regards, Art (Middletown, N.J.)
  20. Appreciate the feedback. (My stock does not have any type of angle spacers.) My objectives the first time I shoot will be very modest. Mainly to familiarize myself with the operation of the gun, trying to see what stance works best, utilize push-pull, and of course assess felt recoil with and without cushioning. For those of you who are experienced shooters, I realize I may be sounding overly cautious. However, there are some medical factors involved that are also a reason for me to err on the side of caution until I get some experience with it. Will let you know how I make out. Thanks again.
  21. Hello, new member here. Just purchased (picked it up last weekend) my first shotgun, a Mossberg 590(Model #50668). Hope to shoot it for the first time next weekend. Have not fired a shotgun in many years(actually decades), so am a bit apprehensive about the potential recoil effects. I appreciate the guidance. The stance as described above matches what I also learned in various YouTube videos, so will definitely use it. Same goes for the push-pull suggestion. Regarding Limbsaver; I purchased a slip on "Shooters Friend" from Cabelas. Seems to have many good reviews(like Limbsaver). I am less sure of the proper way to position my cheek. My SG has ghost ring sites(which I really like), and when aiming, my right cheek does seem to naturally rest against the stock. So am I correct that your cheek, and not the jawbone nor the bone above it should rest lightly(?) against the stock? Any specifics in this regard would be appreciated. Just trying to make my first experience firing it a positive one. (Or at least avoid getting a bruised face or shoulder.). Thanks, Art
  22. 410guy, congrats on your new rifle. Where did you buy it? Also, the fact you are now at day 8 and counting (and I received mine yesterday in 7 days) leads me to speculate that the NICS folks perhaps batch up the requests from each FFL rather than process them in exact sequential order. I.e. to reduce the number of approval phone calls they would have to make and thereby work through the backlog quicker. Just a thought. Perhaps an FFL on here would know. (Do you receive separate approval phone calls for each approval, or multiple approvals in each call?)
  23. (DSD1026, thank you.) 410guy, my sentiments are the same as you expressed above regarding voting going forward.
  24. Update and Good News: I received a call(from Efingers in Boundbrook) at noon today stating that my NICS approval has come thru. Just arrived home with my new shotgun. Elapsed time was exactly 7 calendar days; 6 business days if you don't count Sunday. Hope this is a useful guideline to those of you in process.
