  1. Did you read the decision that just came form the 9th circuit of appeals? It used history and logic to severely criticize the circuits that have given decisions against CCW. There is much more pressure for SCOTUS to hear Drake now and the points made by the 9th could be enough to sway SCOTUS. I think, for the first time, we have a real chance. 2. I have never been a shrinking violet and talk openly about my interest in shooting with just about anyone that shows a flicker of interest in what I like to do. So it has been that I have had discussions with like-minded folks at work on many occasions and word has gotten around that this is what I do as a hobby and that I am a certified instructor and an active competitor in matches. Last year I ran three guys at work through the NRA Basic Pistol safety course and was happy to issue their certificates. Last month I was approached by one of the software developers asking if I would take him to the range. I happily agreed and he started getting really excited about the chance to actually fire a pistol for the first time. So now he's talking about it to his work group and on Monday I have a group of 3 people who have never even touched a gun, and one other that has a pistol already but rarely gets out with it, that I will be taking to the range. As there are more than just a couple I have enlisted a friend who is also an instructor, not to mention just a great guy, to help teach the group and keep everyone safe. This has taught me a really important lesson: I do not need to convince everyone that shooting is not bad, unhealthy, dangerous, scary, violent, or anything like that. I just need to help a few understand and build their enthusiasm. They will carry the good word forward as well and will probably have greater influence with their friends than I would as a stranger. Another friend in the office approached me last week and asked if I could teach him to shoot because his wife had asked him about getting pistol for the home. I suggested that she might like to come along too and she has agreed - we just need to set a date. So this makes 5 complete novices and 1 semi novice that I'm introducing to our world this year and it's only mid-February! If we can all make an effort to show as many people as we can that have only seen the Hollywood version of shooting what it is really like I think we can make a difference to the attitudes in this State. I would like to challenge anybody that is willing and has the confidence in their safety knowledge to find at least 3 people who have never touched a gun and take them for an introductory session at a range before the end of April. If you are new to shooting yourself, or are not comfortable with the responsibility teaching a novice reach out to your more experienced friends. Even if you only get them to fire 10 rounds of .22 it will be a start. Take them one at a time or as a group - whatever you feel comfortable with. If there are more than 2 or 3, I recommend getting another experienced shooter to come along to help you but plan it first so you both agree on your approach and stance when the difficult questions come up. If you are not experienced in teaching someone to handle a firearm feel free to PM me with any questions - I'll do my best to help. If anyone else would like to volunteer to be available for advice (especially if you have certified as an instructor) please announce yourselves by replying to this thread. Another anecdote: Many years ago, my Dad was very anti-gun and I convinced him to come to the range just once. He discovered that the objective was not to blow seven shades of excrement out of whatever was downrange but that shooting was actually a precise and difficult thing to master. He was converted from an anti to, not an active shooter, but a supporter because he now understood what made it interesting to me. It turns out that pistols weren't really his thing but he decided shooting clays was more up his alley. My Mum (Mom but she and I are British) came out to the range a couple of times too. We don't need to convert everyone to people who actively persue the shooting sports - there would be so much overcrowding at the ranges anyway. We just need to let folks see what marksmanship really means and how much concentration and steadiness is needed to shoot well so they can understand how much nonsense that the current laws really are and how much sensationalist crap flows from Hollywood. Of course, we should also let them know that it is damned good fun! Who accepts my challenge? Stu.
  3. I have never made someone do a job like this if they had reservations. If they are uncertain of getting it right I'd rather find someone else who is sure they can do it. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  4. I'll push the boat out and give you two. Are reloads OK or do I need to get a box of factory and split it for you. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2

  6. That is obviously never going to work. The question is whether you should call for a group to upset the guy even more for expressing his annoyance that you have just undone in seconds with your plough what he has taken many times longer to do by hand. Plus he's going to have to do it again and again. If you take pleasure in that I feel sorry for you. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  7. The mistake you are making, and many do this, is you are applying logic to a political situation. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  8. No problem. I was suggesting a Springfield for you. The Sig is for me Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  9. XD or XDm. My all time "want to get" is a Sig P220 SAO but I might wait for a P227 SAO if they ever make one. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  10. Getting a bunch of other drivers to gang up and dump as much as possible on their driveway is bullying. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  11. Have you tried to figure out why they are angry? Is it because you plow up their property instead of the road? Since when has it been a good idea to feed the bully?
  12. Oops - didn't realise what was being built - sorry. So what do you put in a wet tumbler?
  13. For media look in your local pet store. This stuff works great in my vibrating tumbler. http://www.petco.com/product/102881/Zilla-Ground-English-Walnut-Shells-Reptile-Bedding.aspx
  14. Last year I ran an NRA Basic Pistol class for a few guys at work. One of them has been shooting for over 30 years and was happy to declare that he learned a thing or two. None of us know it all. Sometimes it takes another pair of eyes to draw your attention to something you didn't even know you were doing suboptimally. e.g. Have you ever tried to proof read your own document?
  15. My letter... Dear members of the Law and Public Safety Committee, When you consider bill A823 please answer these questions: Do you think that causing “serious bodily injury” to someone who is not a “law enforcement officer” to be less of a crime? Do you think that someone who attacks you, a member of the Assembly, is due a lower penalty than someone who attacks someone who just happens to work in law enforcement? Do you think I that someone who attacks me, a member of the general population, is due a lower penalty than someone who attacks someone who just happens to work in law enforcement? Do you think a firearm that has been “defaced” has greater potency or causes causes a greater injury? Do you think it would be a good idea to leave the term “defaced” undefined? I sincerely hope you honestly answer all of these questions with “no”. This should prompt you to ask yourselves these questions: When are the members of the Assembly going to start respecting ordinary citizens? Why do you feel the need to waste tax payers money and your own time discussing a law that treats causing “serious bodily injury to a law enforcement officer” a special crime with a special penalty? Why do you feel the need to waste tax payers money and your own time discussing a law that treats causing “serious bodily injury” with any specific weapon a special crime with a special penalty? If you feel the existing penalty for causing “serious bodily injury” to anyone is insufficient why not address that for everyone? Yours...
  16. It does help if you use engine braking by downshifting as it slows all 4 wheels whereas using your regular brakes puts nearly all the bias on the front. When you lock up the fronts you lose steering too. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  17. I don't know about you but I can feel the difference between the slide completing a full cycle and when it stops at the rear. Perhaps, if you have always held the slide stop down you never gave yourself a chance to discern the different feeling. I shoot competitively and there is definitely a speed advantage to doing a slide lock reload and hitting the slide stop compared to having to rack the slide manually. I understand some folks prefer the single option in their manual of arms and will always manually rack the slide - that's fine but they always lose a fraction of a second in a competition. There are also the folks who have no interest in speed.
  18. I would give up the morally bankrupt legislature. If someone stole your car, what would you be willing to give them to have your car back? Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  19. I was working a sanctioned IDPA match and we had a Master class shooter come to the line. The stage was a simple support hand only stage where the shooter started with gun in hand at low ready, safety off, and finger outside the trigger guard. This shooter (not the first and not the last) put his finger inside the trigger guard and I called "Finger!". He pulled his finger out very quickly but then called "My finger is off the trigger". I was not going to argue. I told him "It was on there when I called it". The lesson - even the supposed top-class shooters get it wrong and will argue that they didn't. If you do speak to your brother (and I think you should - just to make him aware and to start him looking for it himself) let him know that he should expect them to deny it if he calls them out.
  20. Here's an attempt at a reasoned answer - please remember this is almost midnight on Superbowl Sunday. In England they wanted to take the semi-auto rifles in 1988. The pistol, shotgun and bolt-action folks said "meh". They took the semi-auto rifles. (The "event" that triggered this was the Hungerford shooting where Michael Ryan killed most of his victims with pistols - go figure) In England they wanted to take the pistols in 1998. The shotgun, bolt-action rifle and muzzle loading folks said "meh". They took the pistols. (The event was Thomas Hamilton killed 15 school children in Dunblane with pistols he had obtained without a valid licence - the people who sold the guns were never prosecuted) In England in 2005 they wanted to stop fox hunting. Deer and vermin hunters said "meh". They banned fox hunting. Please, please, please learn from our mistakes. The anti crowd will use divide and conquer to split us from like minded folks. Don't let them. I don't hunt. I don't shoot skeet. I have no interest at all in muzzle loading. I've done bullseye to death and I want more action in my shooting these days. I will defend all the things I don't want to do personally because I have been burned too many times already by indifference. The anti's attitude is typically "I don't understand why anyone would want to do this awful thing. It should be banned." They need to learn that it is none of their business. If they don't have any interest they should butt out and leave it to those who do. They take their ignorance and turn it into oppression. It is time we all stood together and made it plain that no means no.
  21. Ummm. Let me think about that for a moment.... No! Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.
  22. I have been reloading for a while (started 20 years ago). I have a low cost setup of a Lee classic turret and a disk and dies for each calibre I reload. For pistol rounds, not including tumbling time which I don't have to be there for, it takes about an hour to knock out 200 rounds. When you start out you will go somewhat slower until you become practiced and familiar. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
  23. I think the way it works is that when the bad guy pointed a gun at him he had justifieable need. However, instead of filling in a couple of forms, getting fingerprinted, waiting 30 days for his PD Chief to decide he actually had a justifiable need and then waiting a further 30 days for a superior court judge to agree and doing a qualification, the poor fellow lost his life. If he had survived but the bad guy was no longer threatening him the justifiable need would no longer exist and he would be denied a permit. If a similar event were to occur again he would have to start again with the form filling. As he did in fact lose his life justifiable need died with him as there is no urgent necessity to defend a dead man. I just don't see why anyone can't see the sense in this.
  24. While we still have the fugged up justifiable need clause, will it make any difference? Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
