Odeccut 0 Posted November 4, 2009 To be honest, i was planning to spend no more then 15K, thats what I can probably get this 34' Silverton
Odeccut 0 Posted November 4, 2009 Mike, Did you say maintenance 8-10K? whats included in that amount? Thanks
mikeyboyeee 66 Posted November 4, 2009 If 15k is your budget, go out and but a 15k 24' 2003 boat. To keep my boat in the wtaer during the summer, on land during winter, having the marina do the winterizing, shrink wrapping and bottom painting (which I am now doing most of on my own- you won't be able to), + insurance and Seatow (towing insurance U will NEED on that boat) I pay close to 5k for the year. I have a 21' center console with a single 175hp outboard and gas runs me easily another 2k for the year. This is my final thought on the subject- You are so far over your head yo u have no idea. You really don't. i GUARANTEE, you buy this boat with your level of experience, keep the boat 2 seasons you will easily have $40k into it. Things break on boats ALL THE TIME. Even on my 6 year old boat, pumps go, hoses, etc. On the 25 yr old piece of shit you are looking at, LOTS will break and will be very expensive. That boat is for a fixer up, boat savvy kind of guy, not a noob like yourself. Go to www.thehulltruth.com and start reading about boating. if all you have is $15k to buy a boat and think you need a 28-30' boat, you can't afford boating. I paid 13k for my 21' 3 yr old (at the time) center console and decided to spend the few extra thousand to get a newer boat. You're in for a world of hurt even thinking about anything older then a 3-5 yr old boat. 5 would be pushing it.
mikeyboyeee 66 Posted November 4, 2009 Tony, Is $450 buks for inspection is it for any boat? I just spoke with him, I got price of $760? What are your thoughts about? Thanks Ok, this is my final thought. Add another 300-400 for that survey since the marina will charge you to take the boat out of water to inspect and put back in (if it is going back in). mikeyboyeee 66 Posted November 4, 2009 Thanks Mike, I appreciate your honest straight forward anwsers. So which model would you recomend? I heard that Bayliners are POS Bayliners were historically very low end, but not really anymore (post 2000). They make a lot of brands. Trophy being one of them. My father has a 2001 Trophy and it is a pretty decent boat. He is on his 8th boat, so he would not have bought a piece of crap. Do you plan on fishing aot? Sleeping overnight on it with the kids (if that's the case, you can't afford the proper boat (neither can I don't worry). What is your primary use? Noob means noobie (or new), like I am to guns and shooting
Odeccut 0 Posted November 4, 2009 Basically primarely I want for fishinng and crusing around and occasional sleeover with my wife
mikeyboyeee 66 Posted November 4, 2009 415k is not a lot of money for a boat, especially one you want to overnight comfortably on, but this is the type of boat you should be loking at: http://www.boattrader.com/listing/1999- ... d-92605965 I would prefer a bit newer, but that isn't bad. She will burn a bit of gas with the 2 stroke engine, but a 4stroke or newer tech Injected 2 stroke is pretty pricey. 23-25' walkaround would be good boat for you. Wellcraft, Seaswirl/Striper, Trophy, Hydraports are decent brands. Older Grady white with a newer engine is always a good bet too.

Maksim 1,504 Posted November 4, 2009 ok ok... this is good enough. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/2004- ... d-95952634 but on a serious note to you boat guys... how often do you actually take it out a year? It just kind of seems pointless in NJ unless you got money to throw around.

It just kind of seems pointless in NJ unless you got money to throw around. My good friend has that boat, but in the 40' version. VERY nice I put mine in mid to late April and it comes out Nov 1 or thereabouts. You must use your boat at least 1x per week or it is a waste of $$ in my book. I try to use mine at least 2xs if possible during the summer. Probably more so that I will be no longer married very soon.

djg0770 481 Posted November 4, 2009 so what do you think about jetskis? They're the 'helicopters' of the boating world. Without power, you have no steering...

Cheaper then boats I actually do not know much about them as they are a different animal. Think rice burners for the water. I just want to keep your brother from making an expensice mistake. I would LOVE to have a 34' boat, sleeps 4, can go out in rougher conditions then I can now, etc, but I simply can't afford it. I am thinking of selling my boat as it is now that my marriage is ending and I will only have 1 income. I bought a trailer and doing a lot of the winterization/maint myself, but it still ain't cheap. Gas is $3 on the water and I am lucky to get 2 miles per gallon on the boat.

1911Fan 1 Posted November 6, 2009 25 year old boat. Tell him to be prepared to pump a sh!tload of money into it. Old boats are lots of work. I traded my 18 year old SeaRay Sportfish cuddy in for a full walkaround when the engine problems started. The three best days of boat ownership are: 1)The day you bought it. 2.)The day you catch your first monster and...... 3.)The day you sell it!
