Picked up my brand-new Ruger Mark II, and I have a question

Yes, brand new Ruger Mark II, not Mark III. It's the "NRA Endowment" special edition Mark II (pics & description below) that I picked up brand new and unfired.

 

Racking the bolt takes quite a bit of effort. It's quite a bit more difficult than the (well-used) Mark II that I've rented from Ready Aim Fire in Bristol, PA. Is this indicative of a problem, or is it simply because it is brand new and it will get easier as it is broken in?

 

Everything functions flawlessly, it just takes a lot of effort to rack the bolt -- enough where after doing it only a few times my thumb and index finger hurt from having to grasp the bolt "ears" tightly enough in order to pull it back.

Probably just new/tight. Shoot a couple of bricks through it and see if it lighten's up. My Mark III is stiffer to rack than my son's Buckmark, but not so tight is seems difficult.

Make sure you use high velocity ammo. My new Mark II jammed big time on a standard velocity CCI round. I was about to send to back to the factory because a new round was stuck in the chamber and would not go all the all in and I could not get the bolt back. I finally gave the bolt and strong pull and it opened. Now that it is broken in, I shoots sub-sonic rounds flawlessly.

Make sure it's clean & lightly oiled. Shoot it 1000 times and it will loosen up great.

I put about 600 rounds through my Mark II, and it has loosened up a little bit. I also stripped it down, cleaned every nook and cranny of any old oil/lube/residue/etc. from it sitting unfired for about 5 years, and put a light coating of fresh oil on the moving parts.

 

It still needs a bit of effort to rack the bolt, but its very smooth. Before, it almost felt like it was dragging on something -- probably a bit of old/broken-down oil. But it feels much better after the thorough cleaning & re-oiling, and a few hundred rounds put through the gun.
