I am considering purchasing a long gun from a NJ resident / individual (not an FFL).

My understanding is that FTF transfer of compliant long guns is legal in NJ. This of course assumes that the buyer and seller both have a FID and matching DL.

If FTF transfer is made in NJ, i.e., local buyer and seller, is there a requirement for some type of registration by the buyer, either at local or state level? Does seller have to do anything specific? If "registration" is not done, does the gun remain "registered" in seller's name? If so, that would not be good ...

Advice please.

There is a Certificate of Eligibility form that each of you are supposed to maintain a copy of. http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/info/pdf/fi ... sp-634.pdf

Furthermore, a generic bill of sale is a good idea. Similar to this ftp://texasguntrader.com/billofsale.pdf
