as long as you meet min. length requirements it can be pinned wherever.. super short closed position looks cool and is great if you are in need of some tactical tight quarters application.. but the reality is pinning it where it best suites you is really the route you should take..

Thanks for the quick response. I am looking at the closed position for home defense, SHTF, CQB type with a halographic sight (EOTech maybe). Figuring closed would be the way to go, or possibly a sully stock. I already have an SPR type AR with a PRS stock and 18" barrel so I am toying with the idea of a shorter version. Regarding the Sully stock, and just for reference, it's the equivalent of a collapsible stock at the first click. I have one and like it a lot.

here are some things to take into account..

 

1) an AR platform gun is not IMO the best home defense round unless you live in the middle of nowhere.. this is a rifle round and i would be concerned about over penetrating the intended target thus doing damage to your dwelling or maybe even others in the home.. OR people outside the home.. my go to firearm in the home is a Berreta storm OR my 12guage.. i have never.. and HOPE to never have to use those in that situation but i feel that they are far more suited for in the home.. the storm is chambered in a pistol round which runs the risk of over penetration but i think a smaller risk than say 223 or 308 (any rifle round).. someone with more knowledge can correct me on the exact number.. but i think the 223 round is traveling at roughly 3X the velocity with 2x as much force.. if we are going to be shooting in populated areas.. in the dead of night.. with other family members around.. we want a round with decent knock down power but one that will not over penetrate.. pistol round chambered carbines to me are probably a great compromise for in the home..

 

2) its just a pin.. pin it where its most useful.. IF the "shtf" and you then NEED a collapsible stock.. just drill the pin out then you are back to a fully functioning weapon..

 

you would have to have pretty short arms to find fully collapsed the BEST shooting position imo..

Avoiding that topic, if you're going to invest in the AR regardless (as I have done the same) for any situation, I agree that the LOP should be your preference regardless. I personally have the Sully stock as well, and I love the short length. I have shorter arms, and I too want to use my rifle for CQB applications (like HD), as well as maneuverability in general. If you can find a store or FFL that has collapsible stocks (even the ones in PA) just so you can figure out what's best, I would recommend that (if you're not already familiar with the length of pulls [LOP]).

The funny part is I've seen (on tv and online) tests done on sheetrock where the .223 round penetrates less than a pistol round. But I've also seen tests that show the opposite Throw away your guns and use a bat

Damagedworld - Penetration (sounds dirty, LOL) is well understood. I have pistols as a first defense in the house scenario. I was thinking of a quick swing weight rifle that can quickly be brought to bear if ever needed, (hopefully never) for additional firepower. I would also like it for a play AR at the range. It's a shame the laws hog tie you so you have to make decisions like this. I am also think of a Mossy 590 for home defense and then the AR would definitely be a range trooper. As far as the pin goes, the last thing I want is any stupid law throwing one of the law abiding gun owners in jail. Anything can be fixed or replaced as needed. Thank you for your thoughts as they are extremely sound.

bbk - Glad you like the sully, definately want to check it out. Also great idea about PA and checking stocks there. I haven't been to Cabela's yet anyway. My arms aren't short, but I am also going on muscle memory for the LOP of a closed stock.

If I had one of those protecting me I wouldn't be too worried about anything The wife would freak tho....
