The "lock" smiths also have MIM (Metal injection molded) internals. Pre locks have forged (I think, whatever it is, its better than MIM.) So pre-locks have better insides too. And if you go back enough you also get a pinned barrel which is also better than the modern setup.

 

In short, if you get a smith (which I think you should) get an oldie!

I'm leaning towards the Ruger. I dry fired one at the Bullet Hole and the trigger felt fine. Hopefully I can make it on Tuesday.

For what its worth, I picked up a new 686 plus last week. Shot it for the 1st time this am at BA. I am thrilled with the gun, a real nice shooter.

I have the ruger GP100 and like it , never shot the S&W to compare it though. I also have the Ruger Redhawk in 44 mag, also a great pistol. Don't think you can go wrong with either.
