another soon to be noob question

Recommended Posts

I am hell bent on being a hunter soon. I have studied the cryptic documents at NJDEP. When they say antlerless deer, does that mean all anterless deer ex. Doe as well? Just bucks with pins?

I want to hunt next season, alot, but need to study up. Thanks

The idea is to harvest does !!!! this is a way for fish and game to control deer populations in a sense you are harvesting 3 deer with every doe harvest..

but if you harvest a buck with no antlers your ok cause their were no antlers to tell the diffrence...Thus calling it antlerless deer..

Ahh, I understand. I figured if they would call a doe a doe, not an antlerless deer.

Thanks for the clarification.

Some definitions from the digest to help clarify:

Antlered deer is defined as any deer with at least

one antler measuring at least three inches in

length as defined below.

Antler length is defined as the maximum length

of a deer antler measured from the lowest outside

edge of the antler burr along the outer curve to

the most distant point of what is or appears to be

the main antler beam. For the purposes of this

definition, the antler length does not include the

pedicel or portion of skull between the skull plate

and base of the antler point.

Antler point is defined as any point at least one

inch long from its tip to its base line, and the

length must exceed the width at some location

at least one inch down from the tip.

Antlerless deer is defined as any deer that does

not have an antler length measuring at least three

inches. For the purposes of this definition, adult

male deer that have shed their antlers, button

bucks and adult males with antlers less than three

inches are considered antlerless deer.

I'm getting back into hunting this year myself. I haven't hunted in about 8 years. I'm re-learning old regulations as well as learning all the new ones. I just went with my dad today to get him setup with a crossbow. I will definitely get one for myself for next year. They are just way too fun to shoot! :icon_twisted: I'm just gonna do shotgun this year. We are both thinking about getting into muzzle-loaders for next year too.

Spikes are males. Antlerless deer means no antlers.

Get familiar with the ruminant biology and traits...you will be good to go and should be able to connect the landscape with what you know the deer will do.
