Transfer of Handgun Within Family

Recommended Posts

Hey I'm trying to figure out, my grandfather has a Savage 1907 that I am supposed to find out if it is legal to transfer to me. A friend passed away and the gun was given to someone else who then gave it to my grandfather so I'm not sure if that would qualify as inherited. He is concerned that since he did not have a pistol permit years ago when it was acquired that the transaction would not be legal.

Does anyone know of any loopholes that would make this transaction ok? I have FID and Pistol permits.

Thanks in advance

No loopholes.

However, if he acquired it prior to about 1966 when pistol permits were started it would be legal for him to transfer. If he lived in another state and moved to NJ with teh pistol it would also be legal. He would just transfer it to you on a pistol permit.
