AR R&D Heavy Buffers

Recommended Posts

OK Please understand how a Gas Impingmet system works before posting.

I run one specialized AR 24" barrel. I'm trying to increase dwell time to increase velocity based on lock-up duration.

Has anyone re-weighted their rifle length buffer to accomplish this?

I know Tubb makes bolt weights but they preclude standard pivoting of the upper and lower.

I know there are spacers to use heavier carbine buffers in an A2 reciever estensions but, don't want a carbine spring.

But has anyone ever opened up their A2 buffer and added weight?

I'm not over gassed or anything, I just want to do some R&D to make a good rifle better.

I would buy another buffer to mess with..I MAy have one kicking around here you can use. About the only thing I could suggest is maybe taking out the plates from inside the buffer, weighing them, then seeing if a corresponding amount of say lead shot would work, basically make it almost a "Dead-Blow' type of thing. I'll check my parts bin and let you know if i still have that rifle buffer.

I'm thinking along the same lines. I have good scales and lead shot. Obviously a roll pin punch. I may even replace the role pin with set screws and drag everything to the range.

Of course this isn't for everybody and will be working on this for my hand loads.

Thanks Al - I just need to tinker.

Keep an eye on your upper receiver for damage from return to bettery. The lmt enhanced carrier is modified to delay unlocking.

Is the buffer actually touching the bcg when it is in battery? If not, I don't think more mass would delay unlocking.

More mass does delay unlocking. But it also makes the rifle kick a little more, which I don't care about and suspect to be insignificant.

You made a very good point though. The bolt carrier should be in contact with the buffer in battery. But before I start dicking around I'm going to double check that that is the case with this rifle.
