WTB .410 or 20 shotgun for my kid

Looking for a simple .410 or 20 gauge shotgun for my 10-year-old son to use for fun only, not hunting.

 

Single shot would be fine.

 

I know I can get one for not too much at a shop, but I thought I would try here first.

20 or 28 avoid .410 and avoid singles with hammers. if you want to try a youth 870 youth in 20 im in jackson the gun is not for sale so its not a sales trick

I bought my son mossberg bantum 20 gauge. It's basically a 500 that has a stock you can add and take away portions as they grow. It's working out great. It even comes with a couple for half off the full size stock so you can use it as an adult. I felt the fact it can be used for years made this the right choice

I'll second a youth model 870 in 20ga, I have one that I picked up for my daughter and wife and I'll tell you I like shooting that as much as my 870 in 12ga..

I think i will go with mossy 20. Found a used one for just under $200. May jump on that or save up for a new one.

you cant go wrong with a 870 or the 500 one is as good as the other the 500s one big plus is the safety on the tang

I got a Mossberg 20ga when I was 12 years old (1974) and still have it today. Great rifle, but a .22 would be less intimidating.

You can buy reduced loads for a 20 gauge if it's a pump, but many semi autos won't cycle correctly with those loads. I shoot at a local club that has a member that reloads 20 gauge shells just for kids to make it easier for them shooting trap. To me, those loads in a pump felt the same as factory loads in my nieces Rem 1100.

 

Whatever you get, make sure to get a good recoil pad, that will make a world of difference!
