Ammo

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Completely new to this. I will be picking up my new .40 cal P226 tacops this week and was wondering what brand and kind of ammo will be good. I would like to use decent stuff.

I've always preferred Federal American Eagle - with a preference for the 165 gr load (makes major PF for games), others tend to favor 180 gr. On the last shipment of ammo, the vendor made an error and shipped 165 gr TMJ rather than FMJ.

FMJ is truly a jacket - a drawn copper cup in which a lead core is is inserted under pressure. This type of ammo leaves lead exposed at the base. TMJ is actually a lead core that is heavily copper plated - thus enclosing the base. These bullets are used in their "green" ammo, so they also use lead-free primers. When I shot it, I was amazed how much cleaner it was - never mind the environment - I'm talking about the gun. Just got another half case. YMMV

I have the same exact gun. Like Pizza Bob mentioned above, I prefer Federal American Eagle 180 grain FMJ. Have not tried the TMJ yet, but I seem to have the best luck with Federal ammo out of all my pistols. No complaints here!

Thanks Guys, Federal it is! Can't wait to pick up the SIg, it's my first gun. Called the PD last week to check up and they said that all my papers were in, just had to type up the permit. Would of had it this week but the officer had gotten reassigned temporally. He is back tomorrow and my FID should be done this coming week. Lets see how they do. All in all not bad, 3 1/2 weeks.

Deadeye74, how do you like the tacops??

Love it! The SRT trigger is very short indeed! The sights jump out at you, very quick acquisition on the target.

Before you take it out to the range, get it home and clean/lube it well. I use slide glide medium. The slide moves as smooth as glass. I suggest checking out the Sig forum for tips and recommendations. Gunsmiths from Grays Guns and Sig are both on that forum. Here is a link to the forum and the P226 lubrication guide. http://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/430601935/m/908103701

Keep plenty of ammo on hand. It goes quick when you load 60 rounds into the 4, 15 round mags!
