AK Bayonet Lug Removal?

Just a quick question.

 

NJ states that a semi-automatic firearm should be considered to be "substantially identical," that is, identical in all material respects, to a named assault weapon if it meets the below listed criteria:

 

A semi-automatic rifle that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following:

(1) A folding or telescoping stock;

(2) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;

(3) A bayonet mount;

(4) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash

suppressor; and

(5) A grenade launcher;

 

For the AK, you keep the pistol grip, therefore, in order to satisfy NJ requirements, the barrel cannot have the dreaded bayonet lug.

 

Are there multiple ways to make the bayonet lug inoperable? I know the most common way is to grind off the ears, but can you also add a weld to the ears to make them too large to accept a bayonet?

I guess you could. Makes sense at least.

 

Problem is, our laws and legal system aren't based on logic.

 

I believe it's best to "idiot proof" myself from any kind legal issues.

An uninformed "authority figure" could look at a bayonet lug with a weld on it and say "well, you still have a bayonet lug on there."

If it's gone, no way to get in trouble for it.

Just to be safe, I would propbably even go a step further and round off the edges of the square box after the ears are removed.
