bhunted 887 Posted December 20, 2013 It is the ammo. My point is that a properly running M1A/M14 battle rifle should digest any ammo. Not sure I can agree but if you feel it should, try the extractor.... When someone says surplus, I think OLD... Newer M1As are modern weapons built around original ideals. That doesn't mean 'it should' do anything you expect. How many rounds did you get before failure? Did you try new in the same fashion, same amount? The reference was for battle. I would use all avenues, new ammo first. Because if its for battle, it's meant to save or take lives. Cutting corners on possibly unreliable ammo wouldn't be part of my mind set in the proving grounds IMHO... What they say over at the M14Forums? lunker 274 Posted December 20, 2013 I am using mixed lots of surplus 7.62x51. German, Israeli, South African. But I have also had occasional problems with new PPU (Serbian). None of this is enough to hinder my recreational.shooting, but it is enough to make me shy away from grabbing it as a "go to" gun. On M14 forums, people have had the same problem with newer Springfields. The recommended fix is a Garand or M14 extractor. Apparently the M1A does not digest ammo that is slightly longer OAL, like PPU. For fold that want to use them on carbine courses (i.e. hard use), some other parts swaps are recommended too. lunker 274 Posted December 20, 2013 Whatz an extractor go for? Go to gun fir?Sent from my iPad 2 using T2 Pro I think it's about $35. Pain to install. By "go to" I mean the rifle I would grab if we had to evacuate our home, and wanted protection. Something handy you could trust your families lives with. Right now my Viet Nam era Soviet SKS or year old Rossi 92 Lever fits the bill better than my M1A.

Tell me ya don't have an AR to fall back on..... Much as I love the M1A platform, I'd rather have something lighter and has more ammo available. usnmars 136 Posted December 25, 2013 an M1 garand extractor works good. can pick them up at sarco for around $
lunker 274 Posted December 26, 2013 I agree here.. You cannot compare an m1 or an m1a/14...To mosin or an Sks.... I would stake my life on my M1 any day of the week and Sunday... I am getting there with my M1A. It seems some of the Springfield firing pins have rough edges from casting and can get hung up on the receiver bridge until you smooth the rough edges. Or buy a quality surplus one. Until you fix it, sometimes that equals click, no bang.
usnmars 136 Posted December 26, 2013 Thats why the early low SN M1A's are cherished by shooters, now manufacturers are cutting corners to make a profit.
junkmanted 54 Posted December 28, 2013 OK so now recommend me a scope mount for it
junkmanted 54 Posted December 28, 2013 The ban law actually says M14S, which are the Norinco and Polytech clones. You can have an M14M1A with a pistol grip provided it doesn't have any other evil features like bayonet lug, flash hinder or adjustable stock. I agree with lunker M14s is banned by name ! That is the Chinese versions . in my opinion as long as it doesn't say M14s it should be fine . I'm not a lawyer or a dealer . But I hope this helps people.
