Rob0115 1,105 Posted April 13, 2014 I need to destroy some primers. Is hoppes good at this? I had a squib in a revolver and I want to soak the ammo so it won't go off.
Mr.Stu 1,922 Posted April 13, 2014 How many rounds are you taking about? If it's not too many I would recommend taking them apart with a bullet puller and then firing the primers in your gun in a well ventilated area. henrym 19 Posted April 13, 2014 WD 40 works well too.
Rob0115 1,105 Posted April 13, 2014 I would take them apart but they are jammed Ina revolver. I'm not sure if it squibbed because I didn't hear anything but the bullet is extended into the forcing cone. Before I push it back in I wanted to soak the gun in something that won't hurt it but will breakdown the primers. I'd prefer no sudden ignition. Any solvent wouldn't get to the primers in a loaded round, loaded ammo is sealed up pretty tight. just pound it out with a brass rod or wooden dowel, everything will be fine. Except do not use a wooden dowel. The wood can split over the end of the bullet and then as you hammer on it, it wedges into the angle between the barrel and the nose of the bullet and makes the situation worse. Use some O-rings or electrical tape around the rod to keep it central in the bore. The unspent rounds will not ignite, just as they do not ignite under recoil.
