koontz946 0 Posted July 30, 2014 Hey all, I know someone who is into reenacting and purchased a "1944 Czechoslovakian Mauser K98k 8x57mm" and was wondering about how to go about transporting it legally, making sure it is safe to fire (already talked to my local shop and they said they could take a look at it), and one question I had was if it needed to be registered (I'm not sure what paperwork was done when it was purchased... it may have been private sale out-of-state but I don't know.) Any help is much appreciated, as are any questions I should ask that might help. p.s. I tried a search but I must have been doing it wrong, as I tried k98 after seeing it in the topics and it still showed no results.
Mr.Stu 1,927 Posted July 30, 2014 In NJ you may possess an unloaded rifle or shotgun if you have obtained a Firearms Purchasers ID (FPID). This does not mean you can take it into Chipotle or Starbucks and no-one will care, but it should cover you if it is discovered in your car while traveling. There is no requirement to register any firearms in NJ. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk
koontz946 0 Posted July 30, 2014 Thanks for the reply... so does this mean as long as there is an FID holder in the vehicle (or must they be driving?) and the rifle (or long gun in general) is unloaded, it's legal? I know it's kind of a dumb question but I'm the only one who takes my guns anywhere and I have my FID on me at all times and they're always unloaded and locked so I don't really think about it. ogfarmer 138 Posted July 30, 2014 Your question has many factors that are not clear. So IF..... this person does not have a FPID and purchased the rifle out of state thru a private sale then they are in possession of a illegal firearm. Also if they already have a FPID and did a private sale out of state without using a FFL then they did a illegal transfer. They must have a FPID and use a FFL for out of state transaction between residents of two different states.
koontz946 0 Posted July 30, 2014 Thanks ogfarmer... and to clarify... the FFL can be any FFL or must be a FFL in the purchasers state of residence?
ogfarmer 138 Posted July 30, 2014 any ffl as long as they have a fpid
T Bill 649 Posted July 30, 2014 Purchaser can use any FFL, however if FFL is out of state the sale must meet the requirements of both states. Out of state FFL is under no obligation to complete sale if they so wish.
koontz946 0 Posted July 30, 2014 OK. Are there any known 'evil features' of 1944 K98ks?
BMWR12 35 Posted July 30, 2014 OK. Are there any known 'evil features' of 1944 K98ks? No they are just a bolt action rifle.
302w 83 Posted August 2, 2014 Also, long guns are not registered. You can possess a rifle without an FID, but you can only legally acquire it by inheritance. You can also purchase legally and burn your FID in the parking lot and be kosher as well.

Im not certain, but i believe you can also legally own those firearms without an FID if you buy them when you live in another state, and move here later on, as long as it is a gun thats legal to own in NJ. At least thats what ive heard
