Transport to Florida residence question

A former NJ resident who still owns a property in NJ but is now a FL resident owns a handgun and wishes to transport it from his house in NJ to his residence in FL.

 

The handgun is inherited and the owner has no NJ FPID.  No carry permit in FL.

 

Am I correct that he is not protected for transport between his residence in NJ and the NJ state line but IS protected by FOPA after that?  And if that's the case, what is the proper method for transport under these conditions?

You are transporting from one residence to another. Thats an exemption under NJ law. You are then covered under FOPA to Fl. The fact it's inherited and owner has no FPID has no bearing on the situation as ypu describe it.

I moved from NJ to Florida 5 years ago and took some guns with me that I did not have any records for, since the paperwork got packed away or tossed out with all the other stuff we were cleaning out. I never have been stopped and searched in all of my life so I did not worry about it. I also tore up my FID card when I got here since I have no family in NJ or reason to return.

I, too, have moved to FL from NJ in early March. I took all my "inventory" with me when I left. I packed all the pistols in a back pack (containing the secure metal cases) in the SUV via FOPA rules (in the back and inaccessible to the driver). I was able to remove the back pack at the overnight stop in SC and bring it into the hotel room. Next morning, I put the back pack back into the SUV in its proper place and kept on going to FL. The next morning (Monday) I was in the county tax collector's office (which is where most Floridians go to do DL related stuff) and got my new Fl. DL.  Problem solved.

 

I did not, however, tear up my FPID or the last P2P I had.  I want to save them as a reminder of what I went through up in NJ and why I'm so thankful I'm not there anymore. :)  Neither are valid any longer, so that means I never again show up in NJ with any of my guns... ever!

      We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

      The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam

      I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.

      Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
