  1. Hey Brother, The vests you referenced in your posts are an older generation of load bearing equipment. I had Blackwater make me one years ago(like twenty) when they were first starting out, and all their work was custom stuff made in Va, as I recall. It worked well, but comparing it to more modern designs is a little reaching. Whether you choose to go with a plate carrier type of set up so that you can include body armor, or a load bearing equipment set up for weight reduction and ventilation, modularity is really the key now, or as has already been mentioned, mission specific. My personal vest of choice is an ESSTAC LBB(Load Bearing Boar). It's a front opening load bearing set up with integrated hydration carrier/mini day pack, and eight magazine pouches. The pouches can be changed between weapon systems, so that you can use the same set up with an AR15 or AR10. It's covered with external PALs for integrating additional pouches, and it comes in the best camouflage pattern to date, Multicam . The reason folks have moved away from subloads, meaning things worn around the hips and legs, really started several years ago, with a British study. It was determined at the time that their soldiers performed substantially better, both in the areas of endurance and agility when the legs and hips were left unencumbered. Current trends and experience have reinforced the findings. Moving everything up onto the torso adds a small amount of additional protection against injury to that area as well. I had my pistol mounted to my vest twenty years ago, and know of many who have found the virtues to doing the same. The old theory was to keep your pistol and knife on your first line(you belt). That way, in a worst case scenario, you could dump your second line(load bearing equipment) to escape and evade faster, while still having them. Unfortunately dumping your gear also dumps your gear, making E&E more difficult, as you'll lose survival food and water, comms, first aid, ect. when you really need it most. It's really not too difficult to move a holstered pistol from a LBE set up to your belt. In the old days, we used to wear a flat pancake style nylon holster for the purpose. It collapsed when empty and could be used to carry the pistol when you dropped the rest of your gear. Nowadays, with set ups like the Safariland QLS system, it's much easier to remove the holster from it's mounting point on your vest, to the mounting point on your belt...Just some food for thought... I hope this helps... Respectfully, Harry
  2. Mine has been laminated for over twenty years. It's never been an issue...
  3. Most likely that angry old guy that has to escort his six, eight, and nine year old around and keep em from getting trampled by the teenagers who shoulda given up on trick or treating years ago...
  4. I have my 20" 590 resting on a couple of rubberized bicycle hooks, inside a bedroom closet hanging over the doorway. It the most likely place to be missed by a burglar tearing through the house, and also keeps it out of the causal reach of my children. It's got an empty chamber, loaded magazine tube, side saddle and stock pack. It's pretty simple to reach in, grab it and cycle the action to load the chamber. It takes less time to do it then type it out .
  5. Hey Brother, I've been carrying a Para Ordnance P14.45 LDA Limited off duty for a few years now, it's got a few thousand rounds through it over that time and continues to be completely reliable. I have a Para Ordnance PDA in .45 waiting at the FFL for me, as well...Hopefully, it will be as reliable as it's big brother. Respectfully, Harry

  7. That makes sense I'm not sure where you are driving from or to, but my FFL is in Allentown, NJ.
  8. Hey Folks, Cops open carry in high security holsters on oversized and secured duty belts. They have been trained in weapon retention to various levels depending on state, academy and department training standards. They wear body armor and a discernible uniform identifying them as a figure of authority. They often travel in pairs or more, and have back up similarly equipped a radio call away. How many have been shot and or killed with their own weapon? How many open carry proponents are trained and equipped to a similar level? Respectfully, Harry
  9. Hey Brother, I'm not tracking...Why did you need to pay for a NICS check when you bought them? You'll have to pay NICS when you pick them up from your FFL, won't you? I've bought plenty of guns through the mail and never paid a NICS fee to anyone but my FFL when he processed my paperwork...maybe I misread something... Respectfully, Harry
  10. Hey Bro, Just keep in mind that if you build it, and have any issues, no one is going to warranty it. ARs aren't rocket science, but they aren't exactly model building, either.... Unless you really know what you are doing the few bills you save, could be made up of a lot of headaches and heartburn trying to get it to run right... I believe it was Pat Rogers that mentioned that bar none, home builds are the single model of gun most likely to choke or self destruct during his courses... It's much easier to buy the quality model closest to what you actually want, then pull the items off it you don't want, sell them and replace with your preferred parts. That way, not only is a problem less likely to occur, but you have some place to send it, if it does... Just some food for thought...as in all things, YMMV... Respectfully, Harry
  11. Hey Bro, Not sure what range you are looking for price range and performance wise, but I've got an Laser Devices OTAL on my POF P308. It's a quality piece, and is visible under all but the brightest light condition to an easy twenty five yards or so. It obviously works much better indoors and in reduced lighting... I've been meaning to give it a run at dusk on my 600 yard range to see how far it really works in dim light. The company claims 450 meters at night... Respectfully, Harry
  12. Hey Guys, The first gun I ever bought at eighteen, was a Mossberg Persuader 12 Gauge, with an 18" barrel and pistol grip. I picked it up for a good price at a pawn shop in Oceanside, California. Being young, stupid and a Marine, I figured if 2.5" was good, then 3" would be even better. After running about fifty OO and OOO Buck loads through it, I loaded it up with six three inch slugs so I could see how it grouped and let go as fast as I could empty it. It shot surprisingly well. I also had a very sore hand for a week...anything beyond about ten yards took a long time to really get lined up, and was still something of a crap shoot to hit. The trade off was watching my cousin punch himself in the mouth hard trying to use the bead sight for an aimed shot..."No Bob! Don..."BOOM Respectfully, Harry
  13. Hey Folks, I'd say "both" for me. If it's a great deal on something I've been interested in and can convince myself that I can afford it , then I'm apt to be a little impulsive and jump on it. The more expensive the gun, the longer I have to plan my attack...sometimes for years ... Respectfully, Harry
  14. Thanks again for the welcomes... I've got a lot of time on Browning M2, and as much as I lover her, she's kind of a big girl, and a full auto .50BMG, even if it were allowed, would likely bankrupt me in one range session ...
  15. Hey Guys, If I couldn't carry because of my job I would certainly pay it. My wife and most of my friends and family don't wear a badge for a living. Yeah, it's beyond stupid expensive, about the cost of one gun a year, but what's the alternative? No permit and standing behind your principals when you desperately need a weapon to save your life? Or carrying illegally and then losing your life in the legal system, even if you win the fight? I personally believe the better option is to get the CCW law passed, crappy as it may be and even with the high price tag. With so many other states charging more reasonable fees, and a large segment of our population living below the poverty line, my untrained eye sees it as a slam dunk for getting the costs lowered on a class action discrimination suit, particularly if we can keep the dollar signs out of the participants' eyes, and are willing to "settle" out of court for legal fees and a documented reduction in cost to a more reasonable level...what screws most of these cases is greed on the part of the participants, ie... I WANNA GET PAID...As in all things, YMMV... Respectfully, Harry
  16. Hey Folks, Thanks for the warm welcome. I got a little of this and a little of that at the moment A few rifles, a shotty or two and a handful of pistols...Unfortunately, I was born good looking, instead of rich...then I got old, fat and had kids...now I'm screwed Main guns are a POF P308 Recon 16.5" set up as a kinda recce battle rifle thing, and a pretty tricked out custom Remy 700 precision rifle in .308. EDC is a ParaOrdnance P14.45 LDA Limited, and/or a Glock 35, but that is likely to be heading to nightstand duty and being replaced on my card with the PO PDA in .45 waiting at the FFL... Thanks again for the welcome...and Semper Fi to my fellow Teufelhunden... Respectfully, Harry
  17. Hey Shane, Nah, I got tired of trying to find good bullets for it. Respectfully, Harry
  18. Hey Folks, I stumbled onto the site while doing a web search for the Barrett M82A1, which I'm hoping to add to my collection in the very near future. I look forward to being a productive member of the board, and am glad to see a board dedicate to NJ... Respectfully, Harry
