  1. If there is an "invasion" of any sort by nation-sponsored foreign operatives, it's likely to be some kind of commando units, going after infrastructures like major bridges and other transportation, power stations, power transmission, and communications systems. However, most of these things can be hacked remotely. Most wouldn't even require an operative to be physically nearby. Think of the virus that destroyed Iran's centerfuges. China is trying this kinda stuff all the time, and you have to imagine plenty of our [other] enemies are trying just as hard. An actual invasion by normal infantry units? Can't see that happening, at least never initially. I have to imagine we have enough spies, satellites, and friendly nations out there to spot [and then neutralize] any major naval force that would have the capability of threatening us...
  2. My last ticket was for "failing to obey(follow?) signs" instead of a speeding ticket. Granted, I was speeding because the car behind me was on my ass, think it was a new Taurus interceptor model I didn't recognize (it was dark out) until the lights went on He'd been following me a short while and I didn't like how I was being followed so closely, so I accelerated into a curve. Most people slow way down for the slightest of curves, so I figured I'd get some room behind me (I pay good money for my performance tires for a reason, after all). Shortly after he got thru the curve, he was on my ass again, so I was certainly moving above the limit, and only then did he throw the lights on. He claimed I'd hit 64 in a 30, which I don't believe, but I had been speeding, so I took the failure to obey signs ticket and just paid it. I'd been pulled over years ago after going through a few curves at speed, cop was coming from the other direction and pulled a U and came after me, claiming I was speeding...I'd been doing the speed limit, just on some tighter curves...again in a car with some performance rubber... He had nothing on me and let me go after a few minutes when he couldn't get me to admit to anything...
  3. I have a Savage 10FCP-K .223 bolt action which has a pretty low recoil. It has a muzzle brake and a very soft buttpad from the factory that soaks up recoil, not to mention it is pretty heavy. I think it has less perceived recoil than some ARs I've shot...and it is plenty accurate. Rifle was around $850-900. If that's still too much, a .17HMR or .22mag would be the only other cartridges I can think of off the top of my head. I recently picked up a Savage 93R17TR, a heavy barrel .17HMR bolt action. The .17 HMR recoils barely more than a .22LR, but with a bit more noise. I imagine the .22mag is similar, and I plan to get another Savage chambered in it eventually. Benefit of these rimfires is the rifles are cheap...the Savages I looked at were ~$250-450 depending on model. Downside is they are non-reloadable rounds... I've never shot a lever chambered in a pistol caliber, but my lever .22LR is a lot of fun. I imagine the pistol caliber levers are even more fun, and if you reload, you can tailor separate loads for yourself and your wife. I plan to get a lever in .38/.357 at some point too.
  4. I never liked the look or feel of the P226 E2s when I was first handgun shopping, so I went with the traditional grip on my P226. After shooting a friend's P229 E2, I've come around on the E2, though I still dislike the look of the E2s... I always thought the P226 was a perfect size, until I held a P220...the slim grips on the P220 sold me on that gun, and I will own one. I'm now thinking of getting an E2 retrofit kit for my 226. I have fairly large hands, and never would have expected the P226 to not feel 100% right...maybe it's just that P220 fit me so much better. P227 seems like an interesting gun, but I prefer the P220. As always, try handling/shooting both if possible to see what works for you.
  5. Maybe the 20 pages are documentation that someone is really following him, and his visit to the police was to apply for a concealed carry permit..? In NJ, that act would likely be enough to get you sent away as crazy... "You... want to........ protect yourself? In public...??? With a gun!?!?!?! And this 20-page hand-written document here is your 'proof?' ......We're going to need you to do a 72 hour psych eval, pal...you must be crazy..."
  6. .357sig, .40s&w, and .45acp has been easier to find than 9mm recently, so if you don't have a stash/reload, factor that in when you are deciding... If/when things get back to normal, 9mm is always the cheapest of the common calibers. Sig Pro 2022 is a fine firearm, I have one in 9mm and like it. With night sights, I paid $500 before the craziness... Glock 17/19 9mm, 21 .45, 22/23 .40 - depending on what size and caliber works best for you. I've got a G23 gen4 .40S&W, and that's what I ended up shooting in my first ever 3gun competition. Sig P220/226/228/229 - these would have to be used for your price point, but Sig refurb guns may be a good value and worth looking for (Sig refurbs have a red band on the grip if I remember correctly). I own the P226 9mm, but I plan to get one of each of these. Beretta 92/96 or M9 - new might stretch your budget a little, but very well respected firearms, if a tad heavy. 1911s are great guns, but I'd personally budget a bit more for one in the future (and did), so I'd hold off unless you find a nice used one for a good price. Something I often mention is that many Glock and Sigs can be converted from their native caliber to other calibers, for example, a Glock 22 or Sig P226 can be converted to .22LR, 9mm, 40S&W, and .357Sig with conversion kits or sometimes only barrels... Good luck
  7. I've got a Marlin XT-22 and it is a fun plinker. I wish I'd gotten the heavy barrel version (and may still do so in the future), but I still enjoy shooting it, and there is nothing wrong with my gun. I threw a scope and bipod on there and shoot at 100 yards with good results from bulk ammo. I've been very happy with it considering it was a $180 rifle. Most of the XT-22s out there are magazine fed, and mags are dirt cheap. I recently got a good deal on a Savage 93R series, which is the 'magnum' version of the Savage Mark II. Based on the 93R and my other Savage guns, the Mark II rifles should be excellent, and I'm planning to get one myself... I don't think you can go wrong with anything listed in this thread... .22s are always fun to shoot... (or were, when you could find them... )
  8. And what did they say about target stands on the other ranges?
  9. EVERY WEEK is "THE BIGGEST SALE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*" at every mattress chain . It gets old. My mattress was from Sleepy's, price seemed reasonable from the little comparison shopping I tried, some freebies included...selection of very firm mattresses at the store I went to was kinda lacking, but I think that's likely true of most stores, I got what I wanted and am happy with it. *of this week and this year
  10. Lightest possible gun that can run hypervelocity .22s (CCI Stingers, Aguila Supermaximum Hyper Velocity) should give you the most recoil you can get out of a .22...but even then, even compared to a heavy framed 9mm, it's never gonna be a lot of recoil and you will never mistake the two, based off everything I've ever shot using factory loads. Many popular models have .22 conversion kits, so you can get a 9mm Sig/Beretta/Glock/etc and a kit to shoot .22s for practice. Of this group, the Glock with a .22 conversion kit will likely have the most perceived recoil, but probably will also have the most perceived recoil shooting 9mm. Plus side, conversion kits don't require burning another permit, so you get a 'second' gun for a couple hundred extra dollars. Certain models of Sigs and Glocks can be converted between 9mm, .40S&W, .357Sig, and .22, so you can get a lot of capabilities out of just one frame.
  11. In some places that have speed cameras, which often use a digital SLR inside an enclosure to capture photos of speeders, people have been known to climb the poles where these are and wrap a few layers of tape, saran wrap, Vaseline, or similar materials in front of the lens. The benefit of this is that it blurs or otherwise obscures the lens, preventing it from being able to issue tickets, while LOOKING like the lens itself is still just fine from a distance... I'm not suggesting anyone do this, but it would be interesting if stuff kept getting on the lenses of these readers... it might give them a clue no one wants these...
  12. Without knowing where you are, I've seen them at Ramsey Outdoor in Succasunna before, though I think the only one they had there last time I noticed was a lefty model... Might be worth giving them a call and seeing if they have any left. I was at Dick's last night, they had Savage 93 (.22mag/17hmr) magazines in stock. I assume that means they carry some of the 93 series rifles, so they might have MkIIs as well. If you don't find something locally, go to Savage's site, and find out the specific models (BRJ, TR, FVT, etc) that interest you. Write down the model name and the SKU. Use this forum's Gun Price Request tool, a forum vendor may have what you want. If you still can't get what you want... I bought my Savage 93R17 TR (.17HMR) off gunbroker for $360 + shipping - it is normally one of their more expensive rimfires. There are a fair number of FFLs who will transfer for ~$40. Looking online, you may find the exact model you want, and for a good price. I've got plans to get a Mark II and/or 93R BRJ, BSEV and FVT eventually. Good luck in the search, you'll love your Mark II if it's anywhere near as fun as my 93R17TR...
  13. The dual recoil spring in the Gen 4's is supposed to tame the .40 a bit better than a Gen 3... Of course, that should also tame a 9mm a bit more, too. In a sub compact carry gun, I'd probably want the extra capacity of a 9mm. A good defensive 9mm round should be plenty effective these days. I specifically wanted a .40, though I wanted a compact, not a subcompact, so I have the G23Gen4. As always, try to shoot both. You may feel differently after shooting em, or you may cement your feelings and know you are making the right choice without any regrets. Plus, Glocks are cheap[ish] and plentiful enough you can always get the other down the road if you feel like it.
  14. But they used .50s in B-17s in WWII to shoot down aircraft, so it must be that all .50s are deadly black assault military anti-aircraft assault rifles with deadly magazine clips. I thought at one point they said this was about terrorism, what with all the dangerous chemical storage containers in NJ... Not that it matters if the terrorists use a .50, in NJ, we got em beat, since we poison ourselves...
  15. Was there last weekend (Sunday) and every lane at the 100yd range was full around 11:45AM. Someone ended up waiting for a table for 10 minutes or so before another member left. By 2ish, I'm pretty sure there was only one or two guys there when my friend and I went to the training range. Today (Sunday), I showed up I think around 2, there was one guy there at the rifle range besides me. A few guys came and went over the next 3 1/2 hours, but I don't think more than 1/2 the tables were ever in use. I heard earlier today was pretty busy... Musta been those PA folks trying to avoid NJ people, who were all at the shotgun shoot It really can be hit or miss. I always used to try to go during the week, because it was nearly always empty, and I'd heard weekends were iffy. Now, I'm fine going weekends... However, it wouldn't hurt to bring a different type of gun as a backup - in case the range you want to use is full. Last thing - make sure to check the calendar on the website. Some matches close certain or even all ranges down... Edited to include day of the week
  16. Was good to see everyone and meet some new people. I had a great time, as always. Thanks to everyone who brought/loaned throwers! Can't wait to see some more pics... Not sure if I'm gonna go to the next one if its at Lehigh...if not, have fun guys. BLF, congrats!
  17. It looks cool, but where is your index finger supposed to go on that..? Smallest guns I've handled that I'd feel comfortable with are the Ruger LC9 or even better [but larger], Sig P239, but I have big hands. If I could carry concealed, I might feel differently...
  18. Only issue is I don't have a hunting license yet...I would otherwise love to
  19. Most people don't want to deal with all those extra steps I always forget I shoot RAW when I'm shooting for someone who just wants a quick picture. Then again, who can read CF these days but people who shoot a nice dSLR?
  20. Looking forward to this...I'll be there and my friend I brought last time should be coming out again. I don't have any throwers at this point...I should have a bunch of clays though I'll be going to EFGA after to try out my new Savage .17
  21. Based on past work at a high end photo lab, 99% of users only use jpg...have no idea what RAW is...have no idea what a TIF is...and have no idea what color calibration is...so Elements or Lightroom are just fine for those people. Based on owning PS CS5 and Elements 8, you can do most of what CS5 does, but in different ways... Advanced stuff I'd always recommend CS6... For the average user, Elements and Lightroom are more than sufficient. Add the for dummies book and anyone can do basic editing with a little effort IMO. D3100 is a decent camera. I'll assume you have the 18-55 with it, did you get the 55-200 VR as well? That'll be the cheapest "long range" lens you can get, should be $250 new. If you want longer range, also consider the Tamron 70-300 VC USD $450 or Nikon 70-300 VR $585... Don't bother with night games (in the dark under lights) with any of these lenses - they are all 'slow'. Faster lenses like the Nikon 70-200 f4 VR $1300? or Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC $1500 are better for low light and fast focus, but reduced range, weight, and cost are downsides... Beware cheap lenses, especially used ones, as the 3100 can't autofocus with older lenses - so while you can get a used 70-300 for $60, you'll be manually focusing it and won't have VR. I'll stick to Canon...any EF lens will work on all my cameras....not that I need any more lenses...
  22. I've used old tamrons that were crap, but their newer lenses have upped the game (24-70 VC, 70-200 2.8VC especially). I'm not claiming any superzoom is going to be a spectacular lens. I am saying, for a woman who doesn't want to carry a big heavy camera and lens, it is hard to beat an 18-270 VC PZD for what it offers. A nikon 18-200 or 18-300 are substantially larger, heavier, and more expensive. Yeah, better optics in the Nikon, and $300-600 more expensive... Most people balk at spending $750 on their entire camera system. Tamron brings a decent superzoom to the masses... I don't run any superzooms (unless you count the Sigma 300-800) as my primary glass... I have a 28-200 that's essentially a high risk lens, something I wouldn't care if it gets damaged and I can use on any of my bodies. Rest of my glass is the fun stuff...all but 4 are 2.8 or faster...
  23. Much as you get dirty looks for suggesting them, the For Dummies books are helpful...I'm sure they have one for elements. I grew up using Corel's photo editing software, had to go to Photoshop for work, bought CS2 and the for dummies book for it, was up and running in a few days. Make sure you get one for elements, as photoshop and photoshop elements can be pretty different in terms of menu commands and locations...kinda annoying if you have to upgrade or use them side by side...but for basic use, elements is perfect... Lightroom is a popular bit of software, but I've never used it... Look for it on sale, some places run specials on it for like half price occasionally. If the wife wants a decent zoom lens, look into the Tamron 18-270 VC PZD. It's good enough for most shooting, other than low light where all superzooms suck. It's not much larger or heavier than some kit lenses, yet gives way more range than a kit lens. Image quality is typically better than that of the kit lenses, or many lenses of comparable price...($450 IIRC). VC system on it is extremely impressive, gives better handheld results on static subjects than I'd ever have expected. It's available in Canon or Nikon mount (Sony too, without the VC)... If the wife wants more reach than ~300mm, that's when good lenses get real expensive real fast. Considerably larger and heavier, too... If she's not carrying the camera now, make damn sure to go to a store and test the camera and lens combo first before buying one, because there's a chance the camera will become an even more expensive paperweight...
  24. Have you noticed any 'insects' that never seem to stop buzzing by your head? Or that "spider" in the corner by the ceiling? It's really the secret government microdrones monitoring everything you say, and every move you make. They know about you and what you're doing....
  25. You know, I like the Five-seveN pistol...and I plan to own one for the hell of it... I always liked the P90 and wish I were able to get one... After handling a PS90 and finding out I can get a mock suppresor to cover that idiotic-looking extended 16" barrel, I even kinda want one of those... I have airsoft versions of the Five-seveN pistol and P90, for whatever that's worth. I think it is safe to say I don't dislike the 5.7x28. So, after saying all that, I really can't wait for you, SpeedKillz, to just be quiet. We get it. You're deeply, madly in love with the 5.7x28 cartridge. Maybe it's the best thing ever since sliced bread. Maybe it is the sleeper of the gun world. But we live in NJ. We can't use a 20 or 30 round mag, so there goes the one major advantage of the pistol. We either get the 10s, or neuter a 20 to 15. I can get a 9mm, .40, .45, 10mm, .357sig "carry" gun (not like we can carry here, either) that holds 15...and I can buy any one of those cartridges locally today. 5.7...I haven't actually seen it locally yet....including before this whole mess started ~8 months ago. You talking about armor penetrating this and that? You're actively HURTING anyone who may want to own one...this state already doesn't like the Five-seveN...you're going to give them ammo to use against us? Lets face facts... In NJ, anything based on a 5.7x28 is neutered, loses any benefit it may have had as designed, and becomes just another expensive toy. Albeit perhaps a fun toy, but a toy nonetheless. I can copy write long paragraphs about this topic...but you're not going to change your mind...nor are you going to convince anyone else here that you're an expert and to take everything you say as gospel and 100% truth. All you're doing is making 5.7 shooters seem like they have to convince everyone, themselves included, they made a wise choice...instead of going with a more tested and proven round. It reeks of a sad desperation...and makes those of us who want a 5.7 gun seem guilty by association of this too... So...enough already... But hey, I'm probably just another keyboard commando, right?
