  1. For non-threatening knives, consider the Spyderco or Byrd Rescue models. These have sheepsfoot blades, so they have a flat blade profile with the spine that curves down to the blade. These are used for safely cutting a patient's clothing with little risk of hurting the patient. There are two Rescue models - the Rescue 79, and Rescue 93, referring to blade length in mm. There are also a few models of the Spyderco Salt series with the sheepsfoot blade. A Spyderco Assist has NO pointy tip, so hard to argue it's much of a weapon. For smaller knives that aren't threatening, also look into the Spyderco Ladybug, Manbug, Jester, Dragonfly, Rookie, Delica, and Native. I've handed a cop a Ladybug knife when he needed to get into a bunch of boxes during an event I was covering...was not an issue... Also totally non-threatening, there are a few Leatherman tools that are worth looking at, like the Super Tool. Cheap knives have cheap steel...so be aware of cheap knives...if it doesn't list the blade steel....I'd be a little worried. I'd much rather have a AUS-6, AUS-8, 8Cr13MoV, VG10, CPMS30V, ATS-34, ATS-55, N690Co, or H1 blade steel over almost any 400 series stainless steels for a general use knife. The first three steels I listed here are available in knives under $30-35. The rest are available in knives around $45-60. Some companies have $50+ knives that still have crap steel...
  2. My last three handgun purchases were from Hackettstown, and it is always a pleasant experience. Despite the small size of the store, they usually have a large selection of guns and ammo. Even recently, they have a decent number of pistols, though ammo in common calibers may be limited... I'll keep going back as often as possible...
  3. FFLs, I sincerely hope that any computers used for NICS checks are used only for that purpose. I was the informal "IT guy" at a small store - and I had to deal with many messes caused by people going online on the computers there. 80% of these were probably caused by one employee who was clueless about computers and eventually just started clicking everywhere on the screen if he got confused. As such, viruses, trojans, and malware were getting onto the computers there, even with antivirus and antimalware software installed and working. I dislike the idea of personal data having to be entered onto computers with potential security flaws... I hope any computer used for NICS is locked down to prevent employees from reading their mail or otherwise just browsing online. It woulda made my life a lot easier if i were allowed to curb that employees computer access...
  4. I have around 5-7 vests for airsoft, from cheap stuff I loan new players, to decent quality stuff made by Blackhawk or Tactical Tailor. I have never worn any of these when shooting real firearms, as I have never had any need. If and/or when I start shooting in competitions where these rigs might be handy, then that might change. I can understand a belt, maybe a breacher pouch, a few mag pouches/holders, and holster for a range day, but not a full getout unless I'm actually doing something serious...or need to look tacticool for a video
  5. Then my Henry H001 (even made in NJ) which holds ~22 .22 shorts is an assault rifle...
  6. Spyderco Delica, Native, Manix series, Dodo series (if you're lucky for your price), Paramilitary, Salt series, Stretch... Honestly, most Spydercos in the line between $45 and $100ish feature good steels like VG10 or CPMS30V. The Salt series are H1 rustproof steel. I'm a fan of Kershaws as well (and own a Speed Bump, and Needs Work), but I own mostly Spydercos. I like that Spydercos have better steels than knives from most manufacturers at the same prices... Also worth looking into a Leatherman Charge TTi, with the S30V knife blades. I'm currently carrying a Spyderco Nishijin "R" plain edge, Spyderco Tasman Salt serrated edge, and a Leatherman Wave. ANY knife will need a sharpening after some use. VG10, CPMS30V, H1, and most other quality steels will hold an edge better and longer than cheap steels. I suggest the Spyderco Sharpmaker, will be around $45 for the basic system, or about $100 for the entire kit including diamond and ultra-fine rods. Plus side, Sharpmaker will make nearly any knife sharp again quickly without damaging the blade...so if you have kitchen knives that need help, they'll sharpen right up... Only knives I haven't been able to sharpen properly are serrated edges with super tight spacing.
  7. Seems early to me...maybe frogs? Is there a pond/wetlands near there?
  8. My first 9mm (and first gun) was the Sig P226R. Wish I'd waited to get one with the night sights from the factory, but I still love it (and I can always add them later, though it'll cost more than if I'd just waited). I went directly from the police department to the store, said lemme see that one, OK, I'll take it. I miss the days of walking into the store, presenting my IDs and P2P, and walking out less than 45 minutes later with a lighter wallet and a new shooter... Honestly, you cannot go wrong with any of the four you mentioned. I've got the Glock 23 (same size as the 19, IIRC), and enjoy shooting that as well. I've shot the P229 and will eventually add one to my collection. And I've got friends with the 92FS/M9 and do enjoy shooting them. Fondle all of them and see what feels most natural to you. Some people can't stand the Glock grip angle, or you may not like the weight of the 92. One other to consider, the Sig Pro 2022 in 9mm. Polymer frame, stainless slide, Sig quality for Glock price. It is my other 9mm. Someone just posted a question about the .40 version, and a lot of us chimed in with our opinions on our 9mm versions. Whatever you get, good luck with it. And get a Sig
  9. Airsoft guns work very well against cicada killer wasps... You can work on shooting moving targets...shooting a wasp out of the air is a challenge. It's scary that an airsoft gun that can shoot through the sides of a soda can or leave welts is sometimes only enough to stun these wasps. If airsoft isn't your thing...there is always tennis.... Since the wasps are territorial, other wasps seem to like to come dive bomb the wounded or dead ones....makes it easier to take other ones out...
  10. I've run CFLs for a while, probably since the early 2000s. I have never had issues with them burning out prematurely. I do not frequently turn them on or off, I don't try to dim them, and I don't use them in fixtures without some ventilation. I dislike the warmup that CFLs tend to have. That would be my biggest complaint about them. I typically run lights for extended periods of time, and like a brighter light...a CFL doesn't get nearly as hot and wastes significantly less power. Incandescent bulbs are only like 10% efficient, meaning the rest is just heat.... A 30W CFL is just as bright as a 100W incandescent... I have started switching to LEDs, though cost has prohibited me from buying them to replace all my bulbs. I will go with LEDs as bulbs burn out. If you want something closer to incandescent lights in terms of color, look at 3200K light, aka warm white. I personally dislike warm white, but I'm not a huge fan of 5500k either, aka cool white. I prefer around 4000-4800k, which can be harder to find. I have one LED bulb that claims it should cost 90 cents a year to run, and last 30,000+ hours based on normal use. Cost me $15. After the initial cost of the bulb, it costs almost nothing...unlike an incandescent, where the bulb is cheap, but you waste lots of money running it. Even if you 'only' go to CFLs, you should save some money.
  11. I own one in 9mm and I may pick another up in the future in .40. I haven't had a lot of rounds through mine yet, but from my limited use, I enjoy shooting it just as much as any of my other pistols. I am disappointed these only come with a single magazine from the factory. I'm also not a fan of the plastic guide rod, but I'll order a replacement soon for that. As for holsters, I got a Serpa for it, and I've been happy with it. I see 10rd mags for the .40 SP2022 on ebay all the time, and they are going for relatively normal prices it seems. I just got a spare 9mm 10rd for around a pre-scare price off ebay. I'd obviously prefer 15s, but extra mags never hurt, and I only had 3 mags for it. Enjoy your new gun!
  12. I'm fully protected from bullets by an overturned wooden table. Jumping out of the way is a viable way of avoiding gunshot-related injury. All guns sound exactly like a shotgun being pumped. Even if already cocked. Double barrel shotguns are all pump actions in anything animated. A handgun is more accurate at 200 yards than a sniper rifle is. Apparently no one ever carries a gun with a round in the chamber.
  13. Only Longs I've run were the CCI Quiet .22 - 710fps stuff that they made before they came out with the Quiet .22 LRs. The Longs seemed quieter than the LR ones... I bought 3 packs of the Longs because I didn't pay attention... I don't see much use for the Shorts or Longs [for me], but at times like this, I'm not going to hesitate to buy any of them, as I have guns that can shoot any - S/L/LR. Anything that will allow me to keep shooting... If there were no shortage, I might get more of the Quiet 22s, but I wouldn't get the longs for regular use unless they were even cheaper than the LRs
  14. "Only shot by a little old lady after going to church on Sundays..." Some people may just pick up a gun they think they want (online?) having never handled it, find it's not for them, and just sell it. Most states don't make you go through all the hoops we do, so selling it off to get a new one is no hassle. Or it was a HD gun that sat in a drawer in the nightstand the last 5 years... I have yet to sell any of mine, but if I did, I have at least a rough estimate of rounds through my guns...
  15. I too have the 10FCP-K and do enjoy shooting it. It is accurate out of the box, perhaps more so than I am, and that is using the cheap Remington/WWB I often run through it. I've only shot mine to 100yds, but it has done well for me. I've added a Harris bipod and Nikon BuckMaster 6-18x40. I love the heavy barrel, trigger is crisp and light, stock is very solid... Spare mags are [supposedly] out there, for $40-50 a piece shipped. However, even those seem to be hard to find...believe you're looking for magazine 55155. I'd tell you for sure, if the spare I ordered in January ever shows up.... They claim these are 4 round mags, but it is a 5 round mag...
  16. I've got the Sig 1911 TTT. I've put about 1000 rounds through it so far....only issues I've had were with some handloads (not mine...I've learned my lesson). I have had no issues with factory ammo. I can shoot the TTT quite well, better than most of my other pistols to be honest. I prefer the "Sig look" of the TTT vs. the classic 1911 style...Mine was made April 2011 and I'm the original owner...can't speak to current production, but I'm happy with all my Sig pistols... I've had a few minutes behind a P220 carry, and I loved it as well. I felt it fit me perfectly, perhaps even more so than the P226 I own, and I thought that was the perfect gun for me.... I'd imagine you can't go wrong either way...see what fits better for you...I'm planning to get the P220 as well. Mine currently has carbon fiber grips, not the factory wood grips...
  17. Hah! Looking for a Glock 20 or 21 next...I've really been thinking about getting a 10mm...I already have a .45, so I'll probably hold off on that for now. I just picked up a 23 Gen 4 earlier this year...
  18. Looks like polyethylene shot to me... Like this: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/AMM-8112 Never seen one made by Remington, though I've never really researched their shells...
  19. I've got the GSG-522SD [MP5SD5 clone]. Can't speak for the Walter/Umarex stuff, but the GSG does indeed have a terrible wobble in their flimsy full stock, and I am always on the lookout for a real MP5 stock for mine. It is also very important to have loctite on most of the screws used on the gun, as they do seem to find a way to work loose too easily. I'm fairly certain the GSG stock is made for cheap airsoft guns, and sadly wobbles more than my [airsoft ]TM MP5A4's plastic stock does. That said, still a damn fun gun to shoot when maintained properly. I've been wondering about how the walther rimfire replicas shoot, because they do have some fun looking stuff I'd love to get...
  20. http://demigodllc.com/articles/practical-long-range-rifle-shooting-equipment/ I was looking up some ballistic information for .223 after reading the article in the OP, and came across a link to this article, a bit longer read and a bit more in depth in three parts, but still plenty of useful information on long range shooting, geared slightly more to people interested in long range shooting competitions. I wish EFGA had a range over 100 yards long...this is something I do hope to get into in the future, and while I am still a newbie to it, I'd love to try my hand at 200/300+ yard shooting using the .223 (and hell, even .22).
  21. They're .22s...you can get both types [used] for slightly more than your budget if you shop smart.... I've seen a lot of love for the Marlin 795 and Remington 597s, and of course, the standard for semi-autos, the 10/22...as for bolt actions, I love my Marlins (25N and XT-22), and plan to add one of the Savage models eventually. A Henry lever action should round out your collection....
  22. I do want a Steyr USR....I'd been hoping to pick one up this year...doubt that's gonna happen now...I hate seeing one pop up for sale on this forum occasionally and not being able to afford one... If not the USR, I'd like a PTR MSG91C...as I have always liked the MSG90... Not a semi-auto, but I've always wanted an Accuracy International AW series, and have always thought they were pretty damn cool.... Eventually I hope I can get one of all three...
  23. I too own a P226 in 9mm, and while I always thought it felt great in my hands, I fell even more in love with the P220 after firing one... Think of it as a slimmer P226... I have big hands, and the P226 fits fine, but the P220 is actually even better feeling IMO. As for 1911s, I own the Sig 1911 TTT, and it has been great to me thus far...also a fun gun to shoot. Either Sig - a P220 or variety of 1911 - should be under $1000 (or were pre-panic), except for maybe a few top-tier models. I was looking at the P220 Elite Dark and pre panic, they were selling for around $950 or so online, despite the MSRP of ~$1200...same for my 1911TTT... My next Sig is likely going to be a P220, because I really did think it felt more at home in my hands than even the P226...
  24. I've always been a long-range kinda guy. First with FPS games...always liked single shot long range shooting. I was a hell of a shot in Counterstrike with the scout...used to infuriate the AWPers... Got into photography...within a week of getting my first dSLR, got myself a 300mm. Found it wasn't nearly long enough, and now own an 800mm f/5.6...and still use a teleconverter with it occasionally.... Got into airsoft...my rifles are well known...I've always liked being able to pick off players from distances they don't think they can be hit from...and it's the only way I can own a PSG1 in this state... Now, I've gotten into real firearms, and LOVE the challenge of shooting at longer ranges...even if that is merely 100 yards for the time being... I do plan to eventually get serious about long range precision shooting...I just wish I could afford to do so right now... All that said....I still do enjoy shooting my handguns, my shotguns, hell, all my guns...Very few things bring as big a grin to my face as a day of shooting...no matter what the gun....
