  1. Don't get discouraged from my feedback. I don't know how competent you are with sharpening. I've been sharpening knives since I've been in the Boy Scouts in rlementary school. Just want to make you aware that it's a PITA to sharpen when compared to the more popular steels out there. It's not impossible to sharpen and a few minutes of edge conditioning will keep you from many minutes of restoring an edge. You can always send it off to get resharpened.
  2. Great. I went from a #4 state to #1. Did my taxes last week and got no state returns. This sux.
  3. Thanks. My knife collecting has screeched to a halt, and my interest have shifted more to lead dispensers.
  4. The 14c28n would be easier to sharpen than the M4. It's metallurgy allows for easier sharpening and higher edge finish. M4 steel was designed to be very hard and wear resistant due to it's high amount of Vanadium and Tungsten. So it can hold an edge well, but it's resistant to wear so you need a bit more work to wear it down to a sharp edge again. Another annoying steel is S110V. I have a Kershaw Shallot with that steel. I was reprofiling the edge to be finer, and if I didn't have diamond stones, I probably would've broken my stones. The Vanadium amount is really high for this steel.
  5. For me, I have little hands roaming around the house so I need to make sure I don't get any calls from the school on Show and Tell day. For security, I'd rather loose a saw blade than loose the saw, if you catch my drift. I'm with you on locking everything up. I got room so I keep them in my safe, but if I run out, a lower grade cabinet with a lock will be fine for me. All safes and cabinets are deterrents. If someone really wants to get in, they can. Do what make you feel good at night. No one should tell you otherwise, unless it's illegal.
  6. If I was lucky enough to have the trouble you're having, I'd get a cheap cabinet for the ammo and save the room in the safe for more toys. The cabinets usually don't come with shelves, I'd need to make some our of plywood to do some organizing. That or a large chest. I just want some security for my ammo, but don't feel I need Fort Knox to store my lead.
  7. Most hobbyist or collectors have more than one interest. Knives are usually one of them, so I'm gonna start the ball rolling on this one. LET'S SEE THOSE CUSTOMS. Here's my Les Voorhies Model 9 in S30V with IKBS. My Elson Dreadlock Lite in CPM154 Can't have a collection without one. My Hinderer XM-18. This is a Gen 3 in 20CV and textured carbon fiber scale. Yes, technically it's a semi-custom, but it's the closest I can get without selling a kidney. For formal night in the town, a Nihiser Wharncliff with silver twill G10 in S30V. My first custom acquisition. A Hedlund Bravo (4th one ever made) in RWL34 And lastly, my Zermeno Azrael 3" in Bos treated S30V with carbon fiber scale. I've been waiting since 2010 for a Scott Cook Lochsa in S90V. Hopefully one day, he'll delivery. Enjoy.
  8. Looks like a pretty good deal you getting. Benchmade is quality stuff with great warranty. I don't have this particular model but do have others. All well built. I'm not fond of coated blades though unless it's DLC. Cerakote will eventually show wear based on how you intend to use it. It's got a deep pocket clip which is also a plus but 4" is big for my taste in EDCs. Hope you know how to sharpen knives. M4 is a tool steel and is quite hard. Price seems good so if you really don't like it afterwards, flip it. Should easily be able to get your money back.
  9. Well, they're not your typical 1911s but thought I'd share them anyway. They're all chambered in 6mm. No, they're not real unless someone's got some magical Pixie Dust to make them real. Send some over, I'd be much appreciated. Ok, now I'm truly out of 1911s to show. Hopefully these pics will inspire some more race gun appearances.
  10. As Nick said, the amount of sharpness is relevant to the task. The profile also needs to match the task and type of steel. A super sharp edge that can cut tissue paper is useless when trying to cut hemp or nylon rope. I use to sharpen all my knife to a razor edge but have since toned down to a coarser edge for my EDC. With regards to the profile, you can reduce any steel to 11°, but how long will it last. A quality steel like S30V with a high Rockwell will hold up much better than a soft 440. Granted you can resharpen 440 more easily than other steels, but if the blade can't hold the edge, it'll curl on itself and render the knife good for spreading butter. Alot of honing to maintain that edge. If I want the razor edge, I finish off with a metal polish on a flat wooden surface. I use that over a leather strop for my honing. It works better in my opinion in that I can control the contact point on the harder wood surface than the leather which is a bit spongy. Some of my knives had a nice finish on the flats that I don't want to mess up. For some nasty reprofiling work, I whip out the diamond stones. After that, Japanese whetstones. I've got all the arkansas stones but will always reach for the Japanese stones. I start from 800 to 8000 grit. They are just faster and provide a very nice finish. The final strop just polishes the edge and removes the micro burr. I've been sharpening freehand for some time now can can feel that I'm holding the angle correctly. A tip to see if you are sharpening at the correct angle is use a Sharpie to mark the edge. Whatever you scrape off is the angle your holding. Final test is with a tissue paper.
  11. Nice. Don't hear many people mentioning a HP. Here's what on the top of my list. 1) Custom Belgium made BHP Mk II from Morris, Yost or Garthwaite. 2) Springfield M1A National Match
  12. Ah, beat me to it. Do you think if it was a heavier standard barrel like a CMMG, it would just blow the squib out, or would it generate excess pressure causing failure and blowout at the chamber instead? Almost seems like this can be considered a safety feature. Wouldn't like either, but I rather have a rupture 20" from my face than a few inches.
  13. Looks like it's a TACCOM3G barrel for an AR. Sorry to see that happen to you. As long as you came out ok and can keep on shooting the next day, it's all good. Parts can always be replaced. Your well being, not as easily. Glad the manufacturer stepped up to support his customer.
  14. I'd add more if I had more. Not sure anyone's interested in my 1911 airsoft collection.
  15. That sux. I'm in Millburn too. Was planning on putting in for another P2P. Luckily I don't have anything waiting at an FFL. Guess I'll have to wait for the dust to settle.
  16. Hey! This is hitting close to home. Then again, what hasn't been. Sooner or later, they're gonna ban straws because of high capacity spit balls. Bubblehead: I think you have an 18.5", right? Mine's a 20" and has a lug, errrr, I mean mount for my sling.
  17. I was always interested in the USP Compact. Maybe it was from watching too much Jack Bauer in 24. Anyway, I was window shopping at Heritage in PA and finally asked to see one. I was completely turned off from the stock trigger. It just wasn't something I was expecting. Gritty and heavy DA. Felt like a bucket of sand was lodged in the action. Maybe a tuned up match version would make me change my mind, but for it to not come from the factory in a more refined state, I was just dumfounded. I did get to try my friend's brand new P30L out a few weeks back. He had the LEM version. I will admit, it's not something I've ever felt before or can compare to. Definitely a long pull and a long reset. Almost felt like a toy with a broken hammer spring. Maybe I'm not use to it, but I'd choose a DA/SA over the LEM. That's if no 1911's were available. Sorry, I'm a Glock hater so don't ask me how I feel about their striker system. PPQ on the other hand, luv em. Played with a XDM and that was a nice trigger pull too. Worth a visit to the local shop to take a look, if they have one.
  18. I know. F. A. = Fulton Armory. Maybe.....
  19. Sorry. Won't be able to make this one. Last minute plans came up so I'm out. Hope to see you all next month.
  20. I know it's early on in the lead addiction, but how many of you actually received delivery around the time of their availability date? I pre-ordered lead from them, and epected availability date was Feb 22, and recently received an email saying availability had changed to Mar 22. I needed to confirm if I wanted to continue the order or it would be cancelled. Another thing I noticed was sometimes the availability date changes after you put them in the cart. I was planning to order S&Bs initially, but when I dropped them in the cart, availability date changed to 2014. Something to keep an eye out for when ordering.
  21. Another life lost to acts of violence is saddening. Later reports are probably going to say the culprit was a legal owner and member of the NRA using an AR-type "assault rifle" with Beta mags. Don't all gang bangers carry them concealed everywhere they go? It's so easy to hide them under their bandanas.
  22. I can't believe this, of all people. What a coincidence that it's happening during the peak of this fiasco. Let everyone carry and see what happens.
  23. Are you kidding me?!!!! Even the 10rd'ers disappear that fast? Sold out.
  24. That's messed up. I'd just go about popping down their stands and just say my sights are out of whack. JK but still that's not cool. I'll stop for anyone that calls for a cold range as I would expect them to do for me. And even if they don't I'll still do it to be the bigger person. What's nice is when I'm walking up to the range and not even unpacked yet, others are calling out for a cold range so I can set up my targets. A+ I'll try to find Walt's good side.
