i bought one from dicks during the summer for $199 +nics. basic carbine model with parkerized barrel and beech stock. they alos have the stainless bbl model with synthetic stock for like $50 more.

Yup, that's exactly what I was thinking! I think I'm going to be buying a low end 10/22 with the black synthetic stock and stainless barrel & action. Shoot that for a while, then start upgrading and customizing. You get a great gun for little money that shoots wonderfully, and a platform with nearly limitless potential for upgrading and customizing. There are so many options and upgrades available for the 10/22.
