Remington 597? Good? Bad?

Was at dick's the other day and noticed they had the Remington 597 in OD green with a 3-9x scope for $169. Seems like a really good deal, but, I dont know anything about the 597.

I played with it for a minute, and it seemed a little heavy for a .22.. and the mag release "lever" (it's really a slide), seemed a little awkward. But for the price, seems like it might be a fun little plinker.

Any thoughts or opinions on the Rem 597?

if you do a google search you will read mixed reviews about it. Its pretty much a base lvl entry gun that'll shoot but supposedly not that accurately. If you can save the coin, I'd go for a 10/22 myself.

Did a quick search, and the results were definitely a mixed bag.

 

Part of me really wants a 10/22. The problem (and it's not really a problem) is that if I get a 10/22 I know I'm gonna end up dumping a bunch of money into it with aftermarket mods.. where as I'd probably leave the 597 alone.

yeah its tempting to mod the 10/22 but I havn't done anything to mine especially since I bought it used with a scope. I sighted the scope back in, and went with it. No need to add the extended trigger drop or a different trigger or barrel or anything it shoots awesome as it.

look at the Marlin Model 60. No upgrades to spend your money on and arguably more accurate out of the box than a 10/22. Matt shot mine Sunday and Anastasia can not put Maksims down. You can find used ones for about $100 in good shape.

definitely a wicked accurate gun, at 50 yards I was putting holes right next to each other consistantly

Not sure how I feel about the magazine tube. Not that I'm gonna be doing speed reloads with a .22 rifle mind you Just not something I gave much thought to I guess. Hard to argue with a price like that tho... hmmm definitely something to think about

The mag tube is not that much of a PIA. Though not as easy as popping in a mag. But you can get 14 rds in it

I don't doubt that I'll end up with a few different .22 rifles when it's all said and down. You can never have too many .22s

As mentioned, the 597 is definitely an entry-level gun. I bought one on sale at Kislin's back in spring 2009. Out of the box, there are a few annoying things about it... the stock feels cheap, the trigger is heavy, and the bolt hold-open mechanism is flimsy.

 

As for reliability, the rifle has been great. I have 5 "3rd-generation" mags, and they've been fine.

 

I got a VQ hammer, which made the trigger a lot lighter. Also, Boyd's often has sales on less-than-perfect stocks. I picked up a nice stock that just needed some sanding and finish for $40. With a cheap scope (which I already owned), I've been getting very good groups.

 

So, for about $300 including the new hammer and the stock, I got a decent shooter. Its favorite ammo is Mini-Mags, followed by Wolf MT, but it will cycle and shoot pretty much anything. Standard diet is Blazer bulk. Just stay away from Winchester Super X if you decide to get this gun. There's something about them that it hates -- I suspect it's the shape of the casing.

 

And to be fair, everyone is right about never having too many .22s... I still want a 10/22 and a Marlin 60... and a Buckmark Rifle, and a Henry Survival Rifle, and a Neos pistol, and.... you get the picture
