Just Got my first AR

So I just got a bushmaster in .223 with the fixed carry handle.

So being new to this type of firearm, and if I understand correctly, can I put a new 'upper' with a different barrel of a different caliber to the 'lower' with just the 2 existing pins? I bought a bushnell red dot sight, and I got a rail on top of the fixed mount.

I am not into lights and all that, I plan on using this in 3 gun uspsa matches...

Anyone want to tell me if I can get a stainless barrel?

I know my question is wandering, but I am so excited as I shot this today and it was so fun, I cant wait to take it out to the range.

Congratulations. Now, yes you can get a different caliber upper, but only as long as the magazine would fit the lower. I believe this to be the case, and someone correct me if I'm wrong. So, for example you couldn't use a .308 or 7.62 upper with a .223/5.56 lower.

As for stainless barrels, everyone sells variants of them... like, literally everyone. So, just check the different brands, and see what tickles your fancy.

Best of luck, and welcome to the [evil] black rifle family :D

The answer is a qualified yes. Some ammo is just too large for a standard AR15 magwell. You need a different lower to shoot 308, 338 Federal, 458 SOCOM. You can use your existing lower for:

223/5.56 - stock upper

22LR - Check out Spike's Tactical (http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.p ... cts_id=122) I can't say enough good things about mine.

9mm - Spike's makes these too, but you would need to have them restrict the magazine to 15 rounds. (http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.p ... cts_id=287)

9mm - Rock River Arms. I have their stocks on my guns and think they make good products.

6.8SPC - Rock River (http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm? ... ory_id=249)

6.5 Grendel - http://www.alexanderarms.com/siteshoppe ... 15&item=30

I hear mixed reviews about Olympic Arms, but they make a lot of different uppers.

Pistol Calibers

Rifle Calibers

There are plenty more options out there. These are just some of the more popular ones. Have fun!
