Celraysoda 7 Posted November 8, 2009 I need some help using these components. I am loading for an M1 Garand. I have 150 grain Hornady bullets (ones with little lead tips) IMR 4895 CCI #34 primers How many grains of powder do you suggest? I know that M1's gas system can be very picky when it comes to things like this. -Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
tbtrout 141 Posted November 8, 2009 Are you using a loading manual or just winging it?
Celraysoda 7 Posted November 8, 2009 I have a few manuals that each mention anywhere from 54-61 grains for the 30-06. The confusing part for me is the bullet grain is from 150-165 so I'm not sure where to start. I hear that a load for the M1 doesn't go by the manual due to the gas cylinder and operating rod. I also don't want to be a story like the one where some guy's M1 explodes into pieces. I reload 9mm and 40. This will be my first time doing a rifle caliber. tbtrout 141 Posted November 8, 2009 Ok, If you have a Speer manual, they have loads specifically marked for gas rifles.

tbtrout 141 Posted November 8, 2009 I just looked a two Speer Manuals and it does not denote special loads for the 30 06, just 308 gas rifles. I do not load 30 06, But Mauser88 would probably be better at Garrands than I am. Sorry I am not much help

tbtrout 141 Posted November 8, 2009 Keep it and get the right load for it. May take a little, but is well worth it. Ask Mauser88

Anybody with an M1 want some free ammo? Just tell me how you did at the range.
JC_68Westy 1,024 Posted November 8, 2009 I got this info off the CMP forum: 147/150-gr. bullets - either FMJ or HPBT IMR 4895 49.0 gr (max) Most seem to load 46.0gr - 47.5gr to be safe
tony357 386 Posted November 8, 2009 I reload 30/06 for my garand, you should not have any trouble with the load data out of powder manuals. lead bullet data is the only data that will not operate you garand, stick to jacketed bullets and data. I use imr 3031 and winchester 760 according to their load data manuals. Get load data manuals from your supplier or go online to the powder manufacturer and print out the load data. do not use old manuals as the charge may have changed over the years.
