Model 60 Mag Capacity?

On a Marlin/Glenfield model 60. How do you tell what the mag capacity is without actually putting bullets in it? (Gun show).

During the mid-1980s, the capacity of the rifle was reduced to a 15 round maximum limit, to meet New Jersey's firearms law for semi-automatic assault weapons. The redesigned magazine tube was visibly shorter than the barrel, which is how rifles from this period can be easily identified. Then in the early 2000s, the length of the barrel was reduced from 22 to 19 inches (559 to 483 mm), to match the length of the reduced length magazine. This had the effect of reducing the length of the rifle from 40.5 to 37.5 inches (1029 to 953 mm). Tube magazine fed .22 LR rifles were never subject to the 10 round limit of the federal assault weapons ban. Marlin made export models of different capacities to comply with foreign firearms regulations.

Did you happen to be at the show in allentown today. I heard somebody asking about a marlin mod 60 mag capacity in Jersey when i was filling out paperwork.

Haha! yep!.. good thing I didn't buy it. I'm pretty sure it was the full capacity one. The dealer wasn't sure... so I erred on the cautious side. The last thing I need is a paper trail to prove a felonious 2 round .22lr assault rifle.

You should have bought it, all you need is a 15 rd tube, as a replacement for the 18 rd tube. You can get them from Marlin, as I did when the law changed....they sent it for free...They call it the Jersey tube.

Haha.. yeah.. I woulda had to leave it at my friend's house until it came in. But he's a n00b to guns, so I think his wife would have gone crazy at that. Slowly.. I'm working on them. He wants to get a rifle. She's almost sold on the idea (on the good days)... they don't know how good they have it

The newer Marlin 60's are NJ legal and have a tube capacity of 14 rds of 22lr only.

the older marlins did... the newer ones are configured only for 22lr.

This date can't be right as NJ AW law went in in 1990.

 

Even with the 15 rd tube if you use bullets that are shorter (like CCI Stingers)you can still get 16 in the magazine.

Not a stupid question as many people and even stores, don't know the answer. Yes it would make it illegal in New Jersey to have a .22 rifle that could hold more than 15 shorts, if designed to shot shorts. That is why the Remington 552 Speedmaster (and the older 550)cannot be purchased in New Jersey. A semi-auto .22 must have ".22 Long Rifle Only" stamped on the barrel. While shorts will fit into this type of .22, it is not designed to function with shorts. North Carolina here I come.

pk90 is that the entire tube 14 rd, such as if i want to take an 18 rd into nj.also, is this hard to swap? just seems too cheap 20 bucks

I bought an older Marlin 60 in PA and then discovered it held 18 rounds, oops! Marlin did not have a conversion kit for it and so I was forced to change the capacity myself. I took the magazine of the rifle and cut some of at the receiver end and lowered the loading port. I also crimped the follower so that the capacity is now max 14 rounds. I posted my solution on this site a while ago but I cant find it anymore. let me know if you want more info and I am happy to help out.
