Remington 700

Recommended Posts

Is it wrong every time I goto the range I see a new gun I want/need? :)

So I'm at Fort Dix today, couple guys from Linden PD there all with Remington .308's, and even our leader maksim was punching the paper with his .308.

So now I'm doing a little homework and I see they have a couple SPS models 20", 24" and 26" barrel length. What is the advantage of a longer barrel, I'm thinking accuracy. Still looking at the .223 model or the .308, at least with the .223 I use those in my AR-15 so it's not another round to buy. I'm going to troll the next 9 pages and see what everyone else has.

Glad i am having a positive impact on the economy. =P

Most folks end up getting 308 to start with, although a 223 is a great shooter too. As we talked, Wolfy has one.

the base models are sps and a great shooters out of the box.

the nicer ones.... the LE line.

SPS Varmint (26" barrel) and I love the Nikon scope so I'd grab one of those too :)

How do you tell if the SPS Varmint has a free floating barrel?

I thinking of getting a lefty, but the more I think about it, i'll stick with the normal version.

I have two, one in 30-06 and one in 22-250. The one I have in 22-250, is lefty and the varmint model with a 3.5lb trigger out of the box, but it is user adjustable +/- 2lbs. Great rifles. I have a savage model 110LE model in .308, GREAT round you won't be disappointed with it. Also, if you are looking to save a few bucks check out the savage line of rifles. I've never had a problem with mine. I'll bring them next time to dix if you'd like to check them out.

Shorter barrel loses some velocity, but in the 200-300 yd range, really shouldn't affect accuracy, At least that's what I read when researching my .308 purchase.

That is what I always understood as well. I think you'd notice a difference at much greater distances, but in that range i don't think it matters much.

Length is a lengthy subject. It has little to do with outright accuracy. In fact current thinking is that shorter stiffer barrels have an advantage. All are trending to 20" barrels including the military. I know several people shooting 20" 308's to 1000.(with the right load). The measured velocity difference is suprisingly small in many rifles. I prefer the handiness and better transitioning qualities of a shorter rifle. Now on a 1 way range to punch paper I wouldnt pass up a deal on a 26" PSS. But if its even money and availability, Id go with an LTR. Where accuracy is affected is a very narrow segment of the trajectory. Id have to do the math to figure out exactly how many yards that is but its small. Say for example your trying to hit a target at 1000 with 168Grn FGGM in X Humidity at x elavation above sea level. At 980 Yds your going transonic so your accuracy blows up at 980. If the diff in an 18" barrel and a 26 inch barrel is 150Fps in that rifle, is that enough to move the transonic tipping point past 1000? If yes then barrel length mattered for accuracy. If it only moved it to 990, then it made no difference.

Disclaimer--- Im no LR Guru. YMMV

Ok, so it looks like I might be picking up a Savage 10 FP in the future. Starting to put all the parts together and I don't know what base/rings to get?

I have a Nikon Monarch 6-24x50SF that I'll throw on it.

I was looking at either:

The one piece DNZ mounts:

or

A picatinny rail:

and 1" rings:

Any suggestions? Should I get the low or med?

Go pic rail. That way if you upgrade your scope down the road you just change out the rings. Budget but decent quality, take a look at EGW.

And here I thought if i get a new scope, it needs a new gun. =P
