71ragtopgoat 23 Posted June 5, 2010 Got to the pistol range at 8:10 am Placed my target 25 yds out. Fired the first shot at 8:30.Completely missing the target and target holder The next 100 rds did not go any better. Very very frustrating. Double checked my stance and grip but could not get near the bullseye. When I hit the paper most rounds landed just off center at the 8 O'clock position. This is a very common problem that I have not been able to get rid of since I started shooting a couple of months ago. Can anyone suggest a good video or book about pistol target shooting from the standing position ??

Regulator72 80 Posted June 5, 2010 Sounds like grip and finger position on the trigger. I had/have similiar issues from time to time. be sure to not grip too tight with your right hand (assuming your right handed) and wrap your left hand around the front of your right hand and use it to form a "vice", basically use the left hand to pull the into the palm of your right hand.. hard to explain.. check this page out http://www.svtreffers.nl/media/download_gallery/Pistol_Shot_Analysis.pdf, i have another that i am looking for that explains it a bit easier.. Also, try to line up where your fingernail starts on the trigger, or the center of your fingerprint.. Here's the other one
Old School 611 Posted June 5, 2010 Let's meet up and I'll watch you. 25yds IS stiff. But you should group nicely at 15. Believe me I'm not the expert but I'll help as I can. Frank
DirtyDigz 1,812 Posted June 5, 2010 Great article that I read and re-read: Massad Ayoob - How to shoot a handgun accurately http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ayoob85.html
Guest Posted June 5, 2010 Remember, with that 45 and the 4in barrel, better to aim a bit higher...

Frank I'm not sure if it was 25 yds. Maybe 15 .It's where most of the target stands are on CR pistol range. Anyway I'll take you up on the offer. Col. Mortimer 11 Posted June 5, 2010 This is the most common problem there is. What you are doing is when you get the sights lined up on the target; you are pulling the trigger fast rather than a soft squeeze. The rapid movement jerks the pistol down and to the left. I am assuming you are right handed. The proper technique is to line up the sights on the center of the target. Slowly increase pressure on the trigger until the pistol fires. The shot should surprise you or at least sort of. The idea is to keep the sights on the center of the target while squeezing the trigger. The sights will drift around but as you get better, the drifting will decrease. After that, the whole process will speed up but will be smooth.

71ragtopgoat 23 Posted June 5, 2010 Here is a pick of my last 25 rnds. This is a common practice for me almost like a broken record no matter what I try. I figure I have shot about a thousand rnds so far.
djg0770 481 Posted June 5, 2010 At least you are consistent. All the holes on your target are low/left.... Have you considered taking a course with one of the professional teachers on the forum?
LorenzoS 100 Posted June 7, 2010 Have you zeroed the sights from a rest? It would be helpful to distinguish how much is the pistol's sight alignment vs. your technique.
71ragtopgoat 23 Posted June 7, 2010 I had the sights zeroed by a smith. It's all me. LOL
Tosser 61 Posted June 13, 2010 Your grip is of no consequence. Keeping a good sight picture and proper trigger control is what you need.
