BillC. 26 Posted July 21, 2010 OK got my new to me AR and I'm thinking about going after a couple groundhogs. Now I've been hunting with single shot varmint rifles for years and muzzle loaders for deer so I never gave any thought to NJ 3 round max in gun hunting laws... So my question is I need a 2 round magazine ? one in the pipe & two in the mag, same as a pump or auto shotgun? what happens if I run across a zombie groundhog ? crazyboy 13 Posted July 21, 2010 You can only hunt with shotgun, muzzleloader, or bow in this wonderful state. You can use a .22 for dispatching trapped animals however.
civictuner04 6 Posted July 21, 2010 no you can use an ar to hunt ground hogs on private property. the gun can only have 3 rounds total. mag capacity doesnt really matter.
BillC. 26 Posted July 22, 2010 Called F & G, three in gun, mags DO NOT need to be plugged. Mags 15rd max of course.
Stickle 2 Posted July 24, 2010 How about a 5 round mag with a block. In NJ you need to have a weapon that is only able to have the capacity of no more then 3 rounds. Barrel included. In shotguns we use plugs so a non permanent wood block in 5 round mag would be legal.

Old School 611 Posted July 24, 2010 Called F & G, three in gun, mags DO NOT need to be plugged. Mags 15rd max of course. Mags DO need to be plugged. My dad got a summons for that years ago. Just take a 10 rd mag and put a piece of wood under the follower and you are legal. Just like a dowel in a 5 rd shot gun. Be safe don't believe a phone call. A little piece of wood can save you a lot of greif. Frank
Greydaddy 2 Posted July 24, 2010 New Jersey Hunting Regulations A .22 caliber rifle need not be plugged, but may be loaded with no more than three shells.
Stickle 2 Posted July 24, 2010 You're right. Page 26 of the NJ F&W 2009 digest. Sorry about my mis-information.http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/2009/dighnt21-33.pdf
Old School 611 Posted July 24, 2010 A .22 caliber rifle need not be plugged, but maybe loaded with no more than three shells. As long as they are not reffering to 22LR.
Greydaddy 2 Posted July 25, 2010 That includes .22 LR, used when hunting woodchuck.
BillC. 26 Posted July 30, 2010 Per fish and game, Clinton law enforcement office. RIFLES (not shotgun) may not BE LOADED with more then three rounds,BUT the magazine need not to be blocked to prevent holding more then three. NOW SHOTGUNS per federal migratory game laws need to be plugged to 3 rounds total capacity
