Serializing Firearms

Why is it that some companies serialize more then one part of a firearm? I notice my 92fs is just serialized on the frame, but my px4 is serialize on the frame, slide AND barrel. Kinda overkill? What part becomes the transferable firearm?

In the US, the serialized frame/receiver is the firearm.

 

In other countries, it could be different.

In Europe, the slide and barrel are the gun. Any European gun imported here gets tge serial number put on the frame.

My 92 is a m9a1 us made. So I guess that makes sense. Do the italian versions have serials on the barrel and slide?

They would but 9x19 is illegal for a civilian to own in Italy. Maybe 9x21 is the caliber used for 92s there.

The only 92s in Italy would be in the hands of the military or police.

 

The 92 is sold to civilians in Italy in 7.65 Luger and 9x21 as the 98 FWIW.
